I'd consider this a "Gameplay Mod" in the sense that it addresses specific AI deficiencies in the vanilla mage companions, and offers a suitable alternative, particularly for those players who don't want to be focus in magic from a roleplaying perspective (or simply don't want to be having to heal followers).
