Post-Release Changes

End of Post-Release Changes

What's New

This changelog addresses changes relating to this specific guide version and includes all changes noted in previous guide iterations unless noted otherwise. See previous changelogs using the link in the page header.

  • A new game is required if updating from any previous Step SSE guide, due to certain mod changes included in this release.

Many new mods have been added, and many existing mods have updated instructions specific to this guide version. Notably, many of the runtime, engine-level mods that were updated after release of the previous 2.0.0 SSE guide have been updated and included in 2.1.0. Overall, there are many obvious and several subtle improvements.

Lighting and Weather

Interior Lighting

Luminosity was replaced with Ambiance to return Step to a more vanilla-compliant lighting overhaul that no longer breaks sneaking to the extent that was evident under Luminosity. This will be most evident in interiors but will also help to lesser effect in exteriors. The result of this change is a look/feel that more closely resembles vanilla, making it a better fit our Mandates. Combined with the rest of the lighting mods this achieves corrected lighting placements, more evident (and accurate) shadows, and a return to a more vanilla-like experience.

Step alters Ambience with custom tweaks that slightly desaturate and warm the default lighting color, which will hopefully be appealing to those who like Luminosity. This may be a controversial change, since some people love Luminosity. We apologize for using that mod in the first place, but it was the best solution available until Ambiance came along ... 2 years ago ... oops, we missed that one!

Weather

Cathedral Weathers' foggy weathers were also customized to make fogs a bit more realistic and to bring them closer to the player while minimizing drawbacks of doing so under Skyrim's limited lighting flexibility. The opposite was done for rainy weathers where fog was a bit overdone in some variants. A few other weathers were subtly tweaked. We think this improves weather variation and realism.

Step ENB

The Step ENB has been significantly improved in terms of graphics quality and fixes. Aside from several tweaks and version iteration of the Step ENB posted to the nexus, a major revision of the ENB weather system was made to consolidate most previous weathers into groups that better reflect Cathedral Weathers Image Space and Weathers differentiation. The result is fewer weathers parsed in groups that require identical settings. The "fog-sphere" effect that produced a transition line around the player in certain weathers has been mitigated, and ENB now preserves Cathedral's look/feel whilst fixing some of it's minor shortcomings (e.g., flat distant mountains, transparent clouds, godray effects). Changes introduced by the Cathedral Weathers Unofficial Update optional plugin (see Cathedral ENB optional instructions) have also been accommodated by the Step Post-Processing Patch and should only be installed for ENB users.
