What controls what weapon is equipped?

I'm trying to track down the source of a bug I haven't seen yet. I have a weapon drawn and I hit escape to save a game and my pickaxe will equip. Rinse and repeat and my weapon will be equipped.  I'm not sure why this event is being triggered when I hit escape. Any thoughts?

thats pretty funny, the only thing I can think of is that you have a hotkey set on that weapon. 

Unfavorite it and see if it continues to happen
