Question

Hello,

I'm looking for a new GPU to replace with my HD 5850.

My eyes are on the Sapphire R9 270X with OC Boost, 4GB VRAM.

I'm asking myself though if it's worth it to buy the 4GB VRAM pendant. Especially for Skyrim (I do have a lot of mods, but not enough power with my HD 5850). I'm playing with 1920x1080 resolution.

Or just go with the 2GB one, which comes a little bit cheapier and sometimes also has a little bit faster clock and BF4 inside.

Is there any future for 4GB VRAM.. or is it just Skyrim that eats so much?

I read everywhere that I didn't even need anything more than 2 GB unless I was running a dual/triple monitor setup. But I decided to get a 3 GB card anyway and now I'm glad I did! As far as 4 GB, I have no idea if you'll actually use that with a 1080p resolution. But I wouldn't go with 2 GB because I regularly use more than 2 GB playing Skyrim. So if you have to choose between 2 GB and 4 GB I would suggest the 4 GB.

Others please give your opinions too, I could be mistaken in my assessment above.

Guess we should make a sticky post about VRAM measurements... they are not the same as RAM.. since read/write buffering etc. is done in a different way then to RAM. Hence you get different values on a system with 2Gb, 3Gb, 4Gb... Yet all can run the game with the same settings equally well.

But there is no harm in getting a 4Gb if you can and the price is good. Minimum I would suggest is 3Gb, that should last enough into some next gen titles. Again if you use multiple displays etc. then more is always better. If you just run a single monitor then it is better to spend more on a better GPU then more memory.
