Wrye Bash crash on launch solution

Question

Posted

Hi there

If Wrye Bash keeps crashing on launch try the following :

1.Open Skyrim.ini with notepad++  (located here: C:\...\Documents\My Games\skyrim)

2.On the menu click Encoding => Convert to ANSI or whatever is appropriate for your system language

3.That's it, relaunch it works ;)

Simple solution for a really frustrating issue. Thought I would share.

PS1: The problem is specific to non english speaker

PS2: If you launch Wrye Bash from Mod Organizer you'll probably get this: "Error! Unable to start Wrye Bash. Please ensure Wrye Bash is correctly installed"

Go to the Profiles folder in your Mod Organizer folder. You'll find the Default profile folder as well as your custom profiles folders. In each one of them there's a Skyrim.ini. Change the encoding as explained before.

Thank you, thank you, thank you.  I was installing on my living room computer and could not figure out why Wrye Bash kept crashing.  I had used GEForce Experience to set my graphics settings, and I think that must have changed the encoding on my ini files so that they were unreadable to Wrye Bash.

I'm shamelessly bumping this thread because it came up for me in a Google search, and I think this additional info could be helpful to others using GEForce Experience.  Loading into Notepad++ (free replacement for Notepad) and changing the encoding on both ini files worked like a charm.

I'm glad you bumped this, because I expect this is also my problem. Will have to test when I get home. :) I had used it a long time ago for Oblivion so I was a bit miffed I was having issues even getting the thing running.

EDIT: Yep, that was totally it. For me it was set to "western" and crashed, so I set it to "automatic" and it worked like a charm.

Thank you
