Broken rain

Question

After completing Unbound at the beginning of the game and starting to head to Riverwood with Hadvar, it started to rain and this is what happened.

minty's lightning mod MCM menu, with a strange weather ID.

I have tried to search for that code and no results come up, so I presume that it was a glitch. Do you think that it is a mod conflict or I was just unlucky? I have a save which was taken during the rain and I have tried to remove the three rain textures in the textures>effects folder, but that made no difference. I can force the weather to change in the console or through the lightning mod MCM menu and it changes correctly.

Is there a console command or easy way to check the weather ID?

I use BOSS to sort the load order. There are a few unrecognised ESPs at the end, which I have bolded.

Are you using enb? Coz the newer ones handle rain as well, turn it off in the shift+enter menu. All the way at the bottom if you are.

Gotta admit, looks awesome. But agree with rootsrat, purple usually means texture Issue

My first guess would be a bad raindrop.tga file for ENB.... mainly because rain without ENB´s rain is just a 2d texture put over the screen.

As for getting weatherID´s ingame. Get STATUS from mannyGT and place its .esp just before a bashed patch on your load order. Then you can get current weatherID´s via its MCM menu.

I am using ENBoost, so there is ENB but the visual part is disabled.

EDIT: I disabled it in the enbseries.ini but that made no difference.

The only thing that I can think of is that a mod has added new weather IDs and this particular one loaded but is missing the textures.

These are the ones which come to mind, I don't have any other weather mods installed:

- Climates of Tamriel

- Realistic Light Overhaul (weather)

- Wet and cold

- Minty's lightning mod

EDIT 2: Found it, it was "Supreme Storms" (https://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/27022//?). I managed to forget to install the two texture files included.

Well looking over your BOSS list then there are a few issues.

1. you should only have one Lanterns .esp... not two. Only the last one will be in effect.

2. Supreme storms CoT version should be loaded after CoT nights.

also with ENB then it can create an enbseries.ini file in which the rain will be enabled by default... which would create that effect if you do not have any .tga file for it. Try to open it and manually disable it to make sure.

If that is not the cause, then try to test other stormy weathers and see if the problem is generic for them all. In which case try to reinstall the mod that provides the rain texture. In your case that would be supreme storms I think.

edit: In general your selection of mods is not really optimal... and you are using stuff that have been proven to provide major stability issues. Like More village animals, and ASIS. Also you have the oblivion gate mod which adds new spawns.. which in combination with alot of other stuff is just going to be a stability nightmare! :) But ofc. that is up to you. Just saying that your list is a bit cluttered and not really optimal and you are most likely going to run into issues down the road.

I was not aware that Lanterns were both full ESPs, I expected that they were compatibility patches. I have checked the downloads section and there is no ESP for compatibility with RLO and CoT, should I use the RLO because that is loaded after CoT and will that cause problems with CoT?

I have trusted BOSS for the ordering of the ESPs, I can manually move it to below the CoT nights ESP but it will move back every time afterwards. Should I use the BOSS userlist manager to add a rule that it is loaded after CoT nights?

Adding the supreme storms textures fixed it, I somehow managed to forget or later delete the textures from the effects folder for it. Once I had added them it fixed the problem on that same save.

I have to admit, I have probably gone over the top with the mods, there are so many that add features which I would like in the game. Could I list out the non-STEP mods for comments on compatibility? I am definitely open to reducing it for better stability. The game seems stable now, the only issues that I have had is during autosaves it crashes easily, but it happens after the save is made so I do not lose any progress. I have tried the autosave function in "Dynamic TimeScale now with AutoSave", but that has the same issues, at least that gives a 10 second warning though so I know to stop and wait for the save. I completely understand if you don't have the time or want to help with non-STEP mods, I will link what I have below.

I did follow the STEP guide regarding installing MVA and the Oblivion gates, so are there STEP mods such as these which I should not install, to maximise stability? Do you know when the STEP guide will be updated?

Non-STEP mods:

Fixes:

Interface:

Graphics:

Environmental:

Characters & Creatures:

Clothing & Equipment:

Animations & Effects:

Clutter & Miscellaneous:

Sound:

  • None

Gameplay:

Some other mods which I have considered, but are not installed (some are already covered by STEP or the mods above):

You can trust BOSS most of the time! However if a mod author of a mod says that a mod has to be in a certain spot then it might take some time before the BOSS team gets it sorted. I just recently installed Supreme storms for CoT and I recall it saying it should be placed after.

As for all other mods. I am sure many people are happy to help out. If you want a guide or inspiration then vist the Skyrim revisited guide.

In general any mod that adds spawnpoints, or adds more actors to the game is gonna make the game noticeable more unstable. This mainly because the game engine is very touchy about spawning new actors, and when there are many then the AI engine kinda stops working which does not help.

This might not be an issue if you are using few mods.. but with your list then it most likely is gonna be.

Also good to know that you got the issue at hand fixed!
