So this thought just occurred to me... i've got skyrim running from an SSD, but i've got mod organizer on a typical HDD... am I shooting myself in the foot performance wise?  I don't really ever hear the drive spinning up or anything but i thought it's worth asking

You could be, if your mods folder is in [HDD:]\ModOrganizer\Mods then yes, you might have reduced performance.

 

I keep my MO folder on my SSD and told it to keep the Downloads on my HDD. I believe this can be done through the settings but I just changed the path in ModOrganizer.ini
