Game crashes when using DynDOLOD

Question

Posted (edited)

Hello,

The game crashes when rendering certain LODs. Everything was generated using STEP guide.

I tried disabling DynDOLOD output only (containing the 3 modules) and roamed all over the map without any crash.

You will find attached some crashlogs (all similar references to "klighting" and always mentioning \hdtSMP64\Hooks.cpp:314 for some reason but I don't know if it's the root cause or a side effect).

I tried enabling Papyrus logs like in the guide and checked the 3 lines in Skyrim.ini:

[Papyrus]
bEnableLogging=1
bEnableTrace=1
bLoadDebugInformation=1

... and set debug to true in: data\skse\plugins\StorageUtilData\DynDOLOD_Worlds.json and data\skse\plugins\DynDOLOD_Data\DynDOLOD_Worlds.txt

... but I don't see any Papyrus log folder created in My games/SSE/.

Thank you.

Also upload the DynDOLOD log and debug log from the generation and the DynDOLOD DLL log for which you enabled debugging. See https://dyndolod.info/Official-DynDOLOD-Support-Forum#Post-Logs.

if you can not find the game's own papyrus logs, then you either did not edit the correct Skyrim.ini or are not looking in the correct folder, which typically is
c:\Users\[USERNAME]\Documents\My Games\Skyrim Special Edition\Logs\Script\ as also explained in https://dyndolod.info/Official-DynDOLOD-Support-Forum#Post-Logs.

The crash logs do not seem to list all game plugins at the bottom. Doublecheck the uploads are complete.

What are the actual steps/actions in the game required to reproduce the crash?

Test what happens if you hide/rename the meshes folder only in the DynDOLOD output, while loading the plugins and everything else as is.

In https://dyndolod.info/Official-DynDOLOD-Support-Forum#Post-Logs, you say "paste these entire log files from the DynDOLOD Standalone folder", where is this folder located?

Alright, I remembered, as I use MO2, there are specific Skyrim.ini linked to each profile.

New crashlog with their Papyrus log as follows, also added PapyrusUtilDev.log so you can see all plugins:

https://pastee.dev/p/L09NegPQ#FvlW94BMaDiXEO9fUWMqaa2wPWSVHc0W

To reproduce the crash: I teleported to Windhelm stables, then I headed to Kynesgrove by foot. The game crashes a few seconds after I left the stables.

I have similar crashes in Winterhold (with reference to "klighting", but this one is hard to reproduce), so I guess it's only in snowy regions as I didn't have any crash in other regions of Skyrim. I only got a crash without skse crashlog near Karthwasten, but I don't think it's related to our issue.

I renamed the DynDOLOD output "meshes" folder, and there was no crash.

The DynDOLOD Standalone folder is the one where you unzipped the DynDOLOD Standalone to when following the second step of the https://dyndolod.info/Installation-Instructions/:
Use 7-Zip to unpack the entire DynDOLOD Standalone archive into a new and empty 'DynDOLOD' directory that is outside of special OS folders like 'Programs Files' or 'Program Files (x86)', User, Documents, Desktop, Download and also not in SteamApps, game, Data or any mod manager folders. For example C:\Modding\DynDOLOD\.

Since the crash seems to be object LOD mesh related and you seems to be able to 100% reproduce it, do a binary search to narrow it down to a single BTO that is required the game to crash:
In the DynDOLOD output folder, go into the meshes\terrain\tamriel\objects\ folder where you will find lots of Tamriel.*.*.*.bto files.
1. Hide/Move half the files.
2. Test if you can reproduce the crash
3. If it crashes repeat step 1.
4. if it does not crash, restore the just removed half of files and instead remove the other half and continue with step 2.
Repeat until only one file remains. It should be about 8 or 9 iterations.

Upload the *.BTO file you found.
