7zip received Tom's Hardware Elite award in this review. There is some useful discussion about the different compression options and formats. We have been recommending 7zip compression with the non-solid option (larger file but easier changes after initial compression) and LZMA2 (since it uses all available CPU cores and, if available, hyperthreading).
