Regarding trough water, debatably couldn't smiths be using quenching oil in their troughs resulting in the unedited texture in game? I know people want to replace it, it just might look that way for a reason, which might change someone's mind about replacing it. I don't remember ever looking in a horse water trough to see if they're the same though.
