NMS Versions

by: Lo2k

Introduction[edit | edit source]

Each mod was designed to work with the game version that was in place when it was released, but months if not years later, the game version is unlikely to be the same.
So the first thing to do is to check what is your current game version.

Ingame version[edit | edit source]

For a long time, NMS had no ingame version, but it's now the case and you can get your current game version by looking in the bottom right corner of the main menu screen :

Steam Build ID[edit | edit source]

To palliate the long time missing version issue, it was noticed that Steam was giving unique IDs to each and every game release, either for Public and Experimental branches.
So since quite some times now, modders are refering to game version by their Build ID. To know what's the Build ID of your game, you just need to right-click on it in Steam and choose Properties. Then select the Updates tab and you will find the Build ID in the lower part of the window.

Steam DB[edit | edit source]

Another way to get this information is to check the No Man's Sky Steam DB depots page.

SteamDB not only displays current Public Build ID, but also the Experimental one, and even the internal (reserved for developpers).

On the capture below, we can see that all the versions are in synch, but that's not always the case.

Branches[edit | edit source]

NMS has two accessible development branches : a public and an experimental one.
They are separated games depots and each one can be updated independantly.
So some mods could work with the public branch and not at all with the experimental branch!

To know what branch you're in, it's simple : by default you are on Public branch.
To switch to the experimental branch, you need to right-click on NMS in Steam, choose the betas tab, select Experimental in the list of betas (if available) and enter the password : 3xperimental.
Doing so, Steam will load the files that are different between the Public and Experimental branches and will use these files from now on. Until you go back into the betas tab and choose : no beta. If so, it will switch back to Public.
