==Introduction== | ==Introduction==
This collection of mods | This is a mod collection created for myself with the goal of transforming Skyrim’s gameplay into something a little more challenging and realistic by combining and tweaking the features from a variety of different gameplay effecting mods while also seeking a balance between immersion and practical gameplay. I started writing this guide for myself, so I could keep track of what was merged in what order and other important notes. I decided to format it for a wiki and put it on my step user page just for convenience. I will not be giving detailed instructions for every step, if you are going to follow the guide, then you should have a good grasp of things like load order, overwrites, merging mods and making edits in TES5Edit.
Q: What will you find here?
A: An absurd number of gameplay altering mods, with an even longer list of patches to make them work together. Hope you have a good CPU because this is surely going to be script heavy.
Q: What will you not find here?
A: ENBs, Body Replacers or High Res Texture Packs. There are lots of guides out there that include this kind of thing. I have had a lot of fun with those in the past, but with this guide I’m looking for the most interesting gameplay I can find. If you want to use graphics enhancements also, then go for it, but I chose to not use any of those for performance and stability reasons.
Q: What is it compatible with?
This mod collection is compatible with STEP:Extended and REGS, that is what I use and what it has been tested on. It is likely dependant on much of STEP Extended, but most of REGS could be safely ignored, though I don’t know why you would want to.
Q: How do I get there? | |||
A: Do a complete STEP Extended install, test it for a day and make sure its completely stable. Then add a complete REGS install, test that for a day and make sure its also completely stable. Then follow this guide and install these mods in the order they are listed and after REGS unless specifically instructed differently in the description. Always read what mods do before you install them, yes you must read everything, if you don’t like reading, then turn back now. You have been warned.
Q: Can’t I just follow the guide without reading all the mod pages?
A: No, if you just blindly install everything then the game will probably not work, or even launch. You really need to learn what the mods do and how to work with them. This guide is just that, a guide. The guide will probably have outdated information and will certainly contain errors, if you think something is contradicting something else, then it might be.

The first section will focus on identifying the types of gameplay behaviors that I want to change. The second section is a detailed guide on how to install all the mods with links to where to find them. The third section gives instructions on how to patch and resolve conflicts. The last section provides a general overview and description of what to expect when you start the game. | The first section will focus on identifying the types of gameplay behaviors that I want to change. ==Part 1 - Gameplay Redesign== | ==Part 1 - Gameplay Redesign==
The main thing I look for when playing any Elder Scrolls game is immersion, the sense of being your character and living in the fantasy world, but as a modern gamer I don’t want to sacrifice the practical elements that make for enjoyable gameplay. I feel there is a fine line where both these worlds can exist together, and that is what I am out to accomplish with this mod collection.
* | |||
* | Accomplishing this goal will require a diverse array of mods addressing a variety of different issues, we can best move forward by categorizing the things we want to change and then determining what would be the best way to go about making those changes.
===Eliminating Exploits===
The following specific instances are things that I want to remove the game.
*Drinking potions mid weapon swing to save your skin.
*Looting armor from fallen enemies and putting it on in the middle of a battle.
*Crafting a ton of items and using the perks on combat skills.
*Enchanting all the items and selling them for too much money.
*Carrying an unlimited amount of items.
*Picking master locks and never putting a perk point into lockpicking
*Casting high level spells with low skill by using +magika effects on items and potions
===Gameplay Concessions===
I do not want to drag out the experience unnecessarily or add things that are ultimately boring or frustrating, so this is a list of things that I considered for the sake of immersion, but I will NOT be including, mainly for the sake of my sanity,
*Removing the HUD elements and compass - I see this in alot of discussions on immersion, I’m not going there, this is still a game.
*Adding animations to actions,.opening doors, picking herbs, etc - time is a precious resource, and what I get to spend playing I don’t want to be looking at my character picking herbs all day.
===Rebalancing the Economy===
When I play a long game of skyrim, money tends to become an afterthought. I end up with so much cash on hand that I can pretty much buy anything and never have to think about it. This is a problem. As a player I should have to plan where to use my resources, if the resource is too abundant then the element of strategy is eliminated. A number of the mods and tweaks in this collection will address this problem, expect to find less money, find less valuable items, sell your items for less profit, and in general have a harder time making ends meet. Want to buy a house? You really will have to sacrifice other things to save up the money.
===Basic Needs=== | |||
Since the early days of skyrim I have used mods that added eating, sleeping and drinking to the mix. These days the experiences offered by these mods are so streamlined that they really feel like part of the game. Having to expend resources on simply keeping you and your companions alive will be an integral part of the experience when combined with a 1:1 timescale and the accelerated passage of time for specific activities.
===Crafting Redesign===
I have a few problems with the vanilla crafting system. 1: increasing your character level by building daggers and making random potions is far too easy. 2: You have to make alot of stuff to increase your skill to get to make the good stuff. 3: Power Leveling the crafting professions will give you unbalanced equipment. The combination of basic needs and the accelerated passage of time for crafting creates a few new wrinkles that add to already not great mechanics
I have spent alot of time working out a way to address these problems, and in the end the solution is a relatively simple set of tweaks
*Gaining skill points in Smithing, Enchanting or Alchemy contribute very little to increasing your character level.
*The rate you gain skill points in Smithing, Enchanting or Alchemy has been greatly increased.
*All material and silver perks in Smithing now have a level requirement.

The following section will give explicit instructions on what to install to make all these mods compatible with each other. You should always read all documentation for all mods you download and have a good understanding of what they do. | The following section will give explicit instructions on what to install to make all these mods compatible with each other. ===Making Room===
With a full install of STEP Extended and REGS you should have around 186 plugins, leaving us about 60 for additional mods and patches, this is simply not enough space to install all the mods we want. I helped reduce that footprint by performing the following steps Rearrange each block of plugins so they are in a continuous group in the order listed and merge them. Remember to disable the plugins you merged. Make sure you have version 1.8 of the xEdit merge plugins script and version 3.0.33 of TES5Edit. Run a check using the filter for conflict losers and fix any problems you find, always load the unofficial patches and make sure they are not conflict losers. Put the new .esp into a new mod folder (right click the overwrite folder in MO) and place after the plugins folder.

===Weather & Lighting===
There are many mods that touch on the subject of weather and lighting. I want a realistic appearance with dark nights and dark interiors. The following combination of mods gives the best effects to my liking. You are free to change these choices as you see fit, none of the patches at the end of the guide are dependant on any of these mods. .

:Version: 3.1 | |||
:Options: Main File, Sounds, Dawnguard Patch, Dragonborn Patch, Soud Dawnguard Patch
:Instructions:Default, Default, Default
:Mod Notes: climates of tamriel replaces the vanilla weather & lighting in the 7 climates of skyrim. the 7 climates are coast, fall forest, snow, reach, tundra, volcanic tundra and tundra marsh. each climate has it's own unique 28 clear weathers & 28 cloudy weathers totalling 392 clear and cloudy weather systems. foggy weather, windy weather, overcast weather, heavy rainy, light rain, light snow, heavy snow and storm snow are used across all the climates where appropriate.

:Version: 2.0 | |||
:Options: Main File, SMIM Meshes, Dawnguard, Dragonborn
:Instructions: Enhancer, No Breezehome
:Mod Notes: Enhanced Lights and FX has the goal to create a more dramatic and realistic mood to the Skyrim lights by adding lights to all light sources and removing any light without a source, as well as the addition many more effects like smoke, volumic lights, driples, etc. I made some friendly redesigns as needed too, and some redesigns for more dramatic looking.

:Version: 3.0 | |||
:Instructions: Option 1, Dawnguard, Dragonborn
:Mod Notes: If you're looking for a darker, more immersive nighttime Skyrim experience, you've come to the right place. I want something where you're actually scared to travel at night, where the woods of Skyrim are crawling with hidden beasts, and where the player can truly blend in wtih the shadows at night. The goal of this mod is to make Skyrim's nights realistic, fun, lore-friendly, role-play friendly, and beautiful.

===User Interface=== | |||
This section includes changes to the UI of the game to make gameplay easier and more streamlined. This entire section owes its existence to the amazing [https://stepmodifications.org/wiki/User:Neovalen/Skyrim_Revisited_-_Legendary_Edition Skyrim Revisited : Legendary Edition] by Neovalen.
====[https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/44091/ A Matter of Time]====
:Author: SkyAmigo | |||
:Version: 2.0.7 | |||
:Mod Notes: The mod adds some widgets to the HUD which can display different time related information. The current in game time can be displayed using a symbol and a textual representation. The current in game date can be displayed using text. The real life time and date can be displayed using text. The mod is highly configurable through the SkyUI Mod Configuration Menu.

:Author: LordConti2 | |||
:Version: 1.21 | |||
:Mod Notes: FISS is an easy to use interface for modders to save&reload in-game variables to/from file. The custom patch at the end will include some MCM user setting files for mods that support this interface.
====[https://https://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/57873/ Extended UI]====
:Author: mrpwn | |||
:Version: 1.2.0d | |||
:Mod Notes: Extended UI is a project that attempts to fix parts of the user interface. At the moment the intent is for Extended UI to be a complementary mod to SkyUI rather than to replace parts of SkyUI. Makes changes to the skill menu, the sleep/wait menu and the console.

It uses a hybrid mode where both the 1st person arms and 3rd person body are visible. Also, any points where the game force switches to 3rd person (sitting, crafting, riding, werewolf, knockout/death, etc.) are now in 1st person.

:Mod Notes: | :Mod Notes: Exploration is a huge part of Skyrim and there are many locations that can be hard to find and easy to miss. These mods help by adding map markers to hundreds of locations. I only added the map markers to these areas. All areas are part of the standard game and the DLC's. It will help you find treasure maps, shrines, dragon mounds, campsites, animal dens, burial sites, skill books and lots of unique locations scattered across Skyrim. None of these locations are inside, they are all outside in the open world. It will not add the icons to the map until you discover each location.

But wait the pile is useless! You take your last breath as your blood freezes in your veins. This mod aims to change that by dynamically changing those useless firewood piles into containers of firewood ready for your plundering.

====MCM Settings==== | |||
This list is extremely long so I created a [https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1EFmcna7PKDfkCYf4148oc-6x1oshBu-r0QTmqFVaGxI/edit#gid=0 MCM Settings Spreadsheet] that shows the changes for each mod. (based on the idea found [https://www.reddit.com/r/skyrimmods/comments/2v84jf/remembering_your_mcm_selections_for_mods_a/ here] My spreadsheet will also include a brief description for each mod that explains what the changed settings are trying to achieve.
====Skyrim Unbound====
Skyrim Unbound is omitted from the spreadsheet because the settings for this mod will be different for every character. You should have a clear idea of the kind of character you want to play, and know something about their backstory before choosing how they are dropped into the world. The settings are pretty easy to figure out, but here are a couple ideas.
Noble exiled from the family
Werewolf left for dead | |||
Escaped criminal | |||
Ancient vampire reawakened
===Character Creation=== | ===Character Creation===
Weapon | Yes, you finally made it, the game is loaded… Remember to set the weight slider to no more than 50% so that the Pumping Iron mod will have an effect, I generally start all my characters with zero weight scale After you create the look of your new character, but before finishing the process you should adjust your weapons tab as described below.
====Weapon Positions====
The animations installed as part of the mod package support the following changes, this is largely a personal choice, adjust as needed. I went for something that would apply to all the character archetypes I intend to play.
*Swords on Back | |||
*Axes on Back | |||
*Quivers on Hip | |||
*Daggers on Ankles | |||
In order for your animations to match the actual sheath position, you have to manually change the weapon position on each character. These are the recommended settings, but I encourage you to explore what all the sliders do as you can resolve many clipping issues by tweaking the position of your favorite items.

====MCM Settings Revisited====
There are two MCM Menus you need to change after entering the game world. Frostfall does not initialize smoothly until you are in the world, and the Gold Adjustment mod does not start until the first quest completes. Return to the [https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1EFmcna7PKDfkCYf4148oc-6x1oshBu-r0QTmqFVaGxI/edit#gid=0 MCM Settings Spreadsheet] and look at the second tab at the bottom of the page named AFTER.

Modern Immersive Skyrim
THIS IS A WORK IN PROGRESS PAGE, COME BACK LATER
Introduction
This is a mod collection created for myself with the goal of transforming Skyrim’s gameplay into something a little more challenging and realistic by combining and tweaking the features from a variety of different gameplay effecting mods while also seeking a balance between immersion and practical gameplay.
Q: How do I get there?
My System Specs
Overview
The first section will focus on identifying the types of gameplay behaviors that I want to change. The second section is a detailed guide on how to install all the mods with links to where to find them. The third section gives instructions on how to patch and resolve conflicts. The last section provides a general overview and description of what to expect when you start the game.
Part 1 - Gameplay Redesign
The main thing I look for when playing any Elder Scrolls game is immersion, the sense of being your character and living in the fantasy world, but as a modern gamer I don’t want to sacrifice the practical elements that make for enjoyable gameplay. I feel there is a fine line where both these worlds can exist together, and that is what I am out to accomplish with this mod collection.
Accomplishing this goal will require a diverse array of mods addressing a variety of different issues, we can best move forward by categorizing the things we want to change and then determining what would be the best way to go about making those changes.
Eliminating Exploits
The following specific instances are things that I want to remove the game.
- Drinking potions mid weapon swing to save your skin.
- Looting armor from fallen enemies and putting it on in the middle of a battle.
- Crafting a ton of items and using the perks on combat skills.
- Enchanting all the items and selling them for too much money.
- Carrying an unlimited amount of items.
- Picking master locks and never putting a perk point into lockpicking
- Casting high level spells with low skill by using +magika effects on items and potions
Gameplay Concessions
I do not want to drag out the experience unnecessarily or add things that are ultimately boring or frustrating, so this is a list of things that I considered for the sake of immersion, but I will NOT be including, mainly for the sake of my sanity,
- Removing the HUD elements and compass - I see this in alot of discussions on immersion, I’m not going there, this is still a game.
- Adding animations to actions,.opening doors, picking herbs, etc - time is a precious resource, and what I get to spend playing I don’t want to be looking at my character picking herbs all day.
Rebalancing the Economy
When I play a long game of skyrim, money tends to become an afterthought. I end up with so much cash on hand that I can pretty much buy anything and never have to think about it. This is a problem. As a player I should have to plan where to use my resources, if the resource is too abundant then the element of strategy is eliminated. A number of the mods and tweaks in this collection will address this problem, expect to find less money, find less valuable items, sell your items for less profit, and in general have a harder time making ends meet. Want to buy a house? You really will have to sacrifice other things to save up the money.
Basic Needs
Since the early days of skyrim I have used mods that added eating, sleeping and drinking to the mix. These days the experiences offered by these mods are so streamlined that they really feel like part of the game. Having to expend resources on simply keeping you and your companions alive will be an integral part of the experience when combined with a 1:1 timescale and the accelerated passage of time for specific activities.
Crafting Redesign
I have a few problems with the vanilla crafting system. 1: increasing your character level by building daggers and making random potions is far too easy. 2: You have to make alot of stuff to increase your skill to get to make the good stuff. 3: Power Leveling the crafting professions will give you unbalanced equipment. The combination of basic needs and the accelerated passage of time for crafting creates a few new wrinkles that add to already not great mechanics
I have spent alot of time working out a way to address these problems, and in the end the solution is a relatively simple set of tweaks
- Gaining skill points in Smithing, Enchanting or Alchemy contribute very little to increasing your character level.
- The rate you gain skill points in Smithing, Enchanting or Alchemy has been greatly increased.
- All material and silver perks in Smithing now have a level requirement.
Part 2 - Installing Mods
The following section will give explicit instructions on what to install to make all these mods compatible with each other. You should always read all documentation for all mods you download and have a good understanding of what they do.
Making Room

Weather & Lighting
There are many mods that touch on the subject of weather and lighting. I want a realistic appearance with dark nights and dark interiors. The following combination of mods gives the best effects to my liking. You are free to change these choices as you see fit, none of the patches at the end of the guide are dependant on any of these mods. .
Climates of Tamriel
- Author: jjc71
- Version: 3.1
- Options: Main File, Sounds, Dawnguard Patch, Dragonborn Patch, Soud Dawnguard Patch
- Instructions:Default, Default, Default
- Mod Notes: climates of tamriel replaces the vanilla weather & lighting in the 7 climates of skyrim. the 7 climates are coast, fall forest, snow, reach, tundra, volcanic tundra and tundra marsh. each climate has it's own unique 28 clear weathers & 28 cloudy weathers totalling 392 clear and cloudy weather systems. foggy weather, windy weather, overcast weather, heavy rainy, light rain, light snow, heavy snow and storm snow are used across all the climates where appropriate.
Enhanced Lights & FX
- Author: anamorfus
- Version: 2.0
- Options: Main File, SMIM Meshes, Dawnguard, Dragonborn
- Instructions: Enhancer, No Breezehome
- Mod Notes: Enhanced Lights and FX has the goal to create a more dramatic and realistic mood to the Skyrim lights by adding lights to all light sources and removing any light without a source, as well as the addition many more effects like smoke, volumic lights, driples, etc. I made some friendly redesigns as needed too, and some redesigns for more dramatic looking.
Realistic Nights
- Author: MountianFisherman
- Version: 3.0
- Instructions: Option 1, Dawnguard, Dragonborn
- Mod Notes: If you're looking for a darker, more immersive nighttime Skyrim experience, you've come to the right place.
Lanterns of Skyrim - Magic Light
- Author: mannygt
- Options: Magic Light Optional File
- Mod Notes: This is a preset for the color of lighting for the Lanterns of Skyrim mod.

User Interface
This section includes changes to the UI of the game to make gameplay easier and more streamlined. This entire section owes its existence to the amazing Skyrim Revisited : Legendary Edition by Neovalen.
A Matter of Time
- Author: SkyAmigo
- Version: 2.0.7
- Mod Notes: The mod adds some widgets to the HUD which can display different time related information. The current in game time can be displayed using a symbol and a textual representation. The current in game date can be displayed using text. The real life time and date can be displayed using text. The mod is highly configurable through the SkyUI Mod Configuration Menu.
FISS
- Author: LordConti2
- Version: 1.21
- Mod Notes: FISS is an easy to use interface for modders to save&reload in-game variables to/from file. The custom patch at the end will include some MCM user setting files for mods that support this interface.
Extended UI
- Author: mrpwn
- Version: 1.2.0d
- Mod Notes: Extended UI is a project that attempts to fix parts of the user interface. At the moment the intent is for Extended UI to be a complementary mod to SkyUI rather than to replace parts of SkyUI. Makes changes to the skill menu, the sleep/wait menu and the console.
moreHUD

- Mod Notes: This is a skse plugin that enables a visible body while maintaining the look and feel of vanilla first person and requires minimal configuration. It uses a hybrid mode where both the 1st person arms and 3rd person body are visible. Also, any points where the game force switches to 3rd person (sitting, crafting, riding, werewolf, knockout/death, etc.) are now in 1st person.

Atlas Map Markers
- Author: kronixx
- Version: 1.7

- Mod Notes: Exploration is a huge part of Skyrim and there are many locations that can be hard to find and easy to miss.

Dynamic Things
- Author: Dominoid
- Version: 1.4
- Mod Notes: There you are almost frozen to death and in desperate need of firewood to light a fire when you see your salvation - a freshly chopped pile of firewood in the camp up ahead. But wait the pile is useless! You take your last breath as your blood freezes in your veins. This mod aims to change that by dynamically changing those useless firewood piles into containers of firewood ready for your plundering.
Dynamic Things Enhanced
- Author: FleischHals
- Version: 1.6
- Mod Notes: This is a kind of patch for the great mod “Dynamic Things” of dominoid. It changes some aspects of the mod and allows the user to change a lot of things which were fixed in the original mod. It furthermore enables now the harvesting of mammoth tusks from the skulls you can find all around Skyrim.

Setting Up Keybinds
You should feel free to tweak the choices made in this section as you see fit. If you follow the instructions provided then this will be the Keyboard Layout you end up with.
ENB
Edit the following in the enblocal.ini file
[INPUT] KeyReadConfig=8 KeyCombination=16 KeyUseEffect=124 KeyFPSLimit=121 KeyShowFPS=120 KeyScreenshot=123 KeyEditor=13 KeyFreeVRAM=122
[LIMITER] EnableFPSLimit=true FPSLimit=40.0
Skyrim
These changes are included in the custom patch via a keybind file, you do not have to do anything. If you do not want these changes then use MO to hide the keybind file.
- Remove Hotkeys 1-8 (we will be using SkyUI Kotkey Sets)
- Remove Quick Load (prevent from accidently quick loading)
- Remove Auto-Move
- Remove Screenshot
- Change Quick Stats to ‘O’

MCM Settings
This list is extremely long so I created a MCM Settings Spreadsheet that shows the changes for each mod. (based on the idea found here My spreadsheet will also include a brief description for each mod that explains what the changed settings are trying to achieve.
Skyrim Unbound
Skyrim Unbound is omitted from the spreadsheet because the settings for this mod will be different for every character. You should have a clear idea of the kind of character you want to play, and know something about their backstory before choosing how they are dropped into the world. The settings are pretty easy to figure out, but here are a couple ideas.
Noble exiled from the family
Werewolf left for dead
Escaped criminal
Ancient vampire reawakened
Character Creation
Yes, you finally made it, the game is loaded… Remember to set the weight slider to no more than 50% so that the Pumping Iron mod will have an effect, I generally start all my characters with zero weight scale After you create the look of your new character, but before finishing the process you should adjust your weapons tab as described below.
Weapon Positions
The animations installed as part of the mod package support the following changes, this is largely a personal choice, adjust as needed. I went for something that would apply to all the character archetypes I intend to play.
- Swords on Back
- Axes on Back
- Quivers on Hip
- Daggers on Ankles
In order for your animations to match the actual sheath position, you have to manually change the weapon position on each character. These are the recommended settings, but I encourage you to explore what all the sliders do as you can resolve many clipping issues by tweaking the position of your favorite items.
- Sword
- Sword (left)
- Axe
- Axe (left)
- Dagger
- Dagger (left)
- Bow
- Quiver
MCM Settings Revisited
There are two MCM Menus you need to change after entering the game world. Frostfall does not initialize smoothly until you are in the world, and the Gold Adjustment mod does not start until the first quest completes. Return to the MCM Settings Spreadsheet and look at the second tab at the bottom of the page named AFTER.
Part 4 - Review of Changes
This final section will give insight into the game and offer advice on how to survive in the redesigned world.
