Nehrim Total Conversion
You may believe that it is only man who is responsible for what he might become. No matter if this is true, in Nehrim, it is not. Here rules another order. Here rules fate.

1.x Requirements & Preparation
System Requirements
Since Nehrim Total Conversion uses the Oblivion game-engine, the same requirements as for the original game are applied. You'll find the system requirements for this guide do differ quite a bit from the Vanilla (not-modded) Oblivion ones you find on the store page of Steam. This is, because this guide will add diverse visual enhancements that require better hardware than Vanilla does.
- Note:
- The Oblivion game-engine is limited. Your performance is likely going to be varied from computer-to-computer. Still, with the following recommendations almost every computer setup should be able to run Nehrim on a satisfying level. Even we do aim to provide a most stable setup, we can't avoid entirely individual troubles.
Hardware | Minimum | Recommended |
---|---|---|
Windows OS | Windows XP | Windows 7/8/8.1 |
CPU | Intel Core i3 (dual core) | Intel Core i5/i7 (quadcore) |
GPU | 1GB VRAM | ≥1.5GB VRAM |
System RAM | ≤4GB | ≥8GB |
On a side note 64-bit OS is highly recommended when modding Nehrim. However, the executable of the game addresses <~2gb of memory usage only and was never updated from Bethesda to have the LAA (Large Address Aware) flag in the executable. If you are running a 32-bit OS the patch won't have any effect.
Windows Folder Options
IMPORTANT:
Windows Folder Options should be adjusted as follows:
- Check Show hidden files, folders, or drives
- Un-Check Hide extensions for known file types
Folder Options are typically found if you open Start ? Computer ? Organize (upper left corner) ? Folder and Search Options ? Tab 'View'
- This can be reverted post-installation.
If you have a modded Oblivion
Please, follow the instructions above. Sometimes mod managers in generally do not remove and replace the modded files. This may cause something to not work correctly or other weirdness.
The reason for starting over.
This gives us a starting point and to provide you with the best support that Hishutup and I can.
This pretty much means remove everything (Games files, inis, custom graphics profiles, downloaded mods, etc.). If you wish to back up your files then do so now.
- Back up locations:
- <Oblivion install>
- <My Games>\Oblivion
- <YourUserName>\AppData\Local\Oblivion
- Deactivate all mods using your choice of mod manager.
- Browse to your Oblivion directory and delete all files and sub-directories.
- Open Steam, right-click Oblivion in your Library → Delete Local Content → Delete. Wait until the game has been uninstalled.
- Navigate to <YourUserName>\AppData\Local and delete the Oblivion folder.
- Go to
- <YourUserName>\(My)Documents\My Games\Oblivion
- Delete the Oblivion folder. It will be regenerated later.
- Deinstall your previous Mod Manager(s).
- If you did use Wrye Bash, navigate to
- <Steam>\SteamApps\Common
- Find the folder Oblivion Mods. Backup first if you want to, then delete.
- If you did use any other mod manager, find and delete (and backup) their mod directories.
Install Oblivion
Oblivion should be installed outside of "Program Files" or "Program Files (x86)" folders. Installation in these folders can cause UAC (User Account Control) to unpleasantly interfere with Oblivion and some of the Utilities.
Expand Change Oblivion's Steam install location |
---|
After Oblivion is done downloading, click [PLAY] in your Steam library. This will bring up the launcher for Oblivion.
- If dialogue box pops up, select [OK].
- Click [Options]. Set 'Video Quality Presets' according to your hardware. Ultra High is recommended because most modern hardware can run it just fine.
- Select Windowed Mode.
- Select your screen resolution.
- For example: 1920x1080 (widescreen)
- Note
- 'Screen Effects' needs to be set to HDR – this is required for TES4LodGen used later in this guide.
- We highly suggest doing a backup of your pristine (Vanilla) Oblivion directory for future use.
- Starting a new game is required in most circumstances.
- Suggested: It is a good practice to backup your pristine (Vanilla) Oblivion for future use. For size reduction use 7-zip – download latest stable version here (v9.20 August 2014)
- 7-zip Org
- For this, navigate to:
- <Oblivion>
- <My Games>/Oblivion
If you want to use 7-zip to archive your game files then copy both of the folder above and add to and archive. If you are going to compress the files using 7-zip then use the Ultra setting.
Open Steam, right-click Oblivion in your Library → Properties → General → enable "Steam Overlay while ingame". This is needed for OBSE.
- Recommended
- While still in Steam, right-click Oblivion in your Library → Properties → Updates → Un-check "Enable Steam Cloud synchronization for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion"

"FIX LATER" adapt for Nehrim -Red
Mod Organizer
- Author: Tannin
- Version: 1.2.13
- Description: Mod Organizer prevents any issues related to mucking up the Oblivion\Data directory, since it uses a virtual Data directory that gives the modders the ability to switch between different profiles without having to revert to a pristine (Vanilla) Oblivion first. For use of more than one game it needs multiple installs in different locations, preferably in the game directory of each game. For Nehrim it must go into <Steam>\SteamApps\common\Oblivion. As for the newest Mod Organizer version, dlc-content files are shown in the left-pane and can be moved so they are part of the file-priority. Everything installed directly into ...\Oblivion\Data directory should show up without a box to tick and the category noting Non-Mo. For more information see the Mod Organizer Guide
- Download: Mod Organizer v1_2_13
- Notes: As for now Mod Organizer does require some workarounds to work properly with Oblivion/Nehrim. As well functionality with 3th party applications might be flawed. Use at your own risk at this time.
- Installation:
- Extract the content of the archive to <Steam>\SteamApps\common\Oblivion
- Navigate to Mod Organizer Folder and search Mod Organizer.exe, right click and 'send to Desktop'. Rename the new Icon on your Desktop to 'Mo Nehrim'.
- Start Mo; it will automatically recognize Oblivion and all your installed dlc's if you did follow the very first part of this guide. If this is not the case, close Mo and start the Oblivion Launcher out of Steam/Library once and let it set the resolution. Change 'Screen Effects' to HDR. Close the launcher and start Mo again.
- In order to make Archive Invalidation be available in Mo, we need a little workaround. Go to the INI Editor and tab to Oblivion.ini. Find section [Archive] and add following line to the bottom:
SArchiveList=ArchiveInvalidationInvalidated!.bsa, Oblivion - Meshes.bsa, Oblivion - Textures - Compressed.bsa, Oblivion - Sounds.bsa, Oblivion - Voices1.bsa, Oblivion - Voices2.bsa, Oblivion – Misc.bsa
- In the same section change following line:
SInvalidationFile= ;yes, here should be nothing!
- Setup Mo for Nexus access according to the guide here (Initial Setup).
