Question

Hey, just curious what most of you use between Wrye Bash and Mod Organizer. I have used both, but never really got a complete and finished STEP installation alongside other mods. I noticed both are not really updated anymore so just wondering what you guys prefer to use. I understand Wrye just fine due to Oblivion days, but some mods are a bit more difficult to install with it and require some manual directory editing. Mod Organizer makes installing extremely easy, but I still question its reliability with installations due to how it moves files around. Do many of u use both perhaps?

Thanks

My automatic merged patch is pretty small-- I know basically that I don't want anything to do with weapons/armor in there since Weapons and Armor Fixes Remade and its compatibility patch is supposed to handle all that for me, with any extra corrections coming from the manual merged patch, and thus doesn't need repeating; so I delete those bits from the merge. I also remove the leveled lists since the bashed patch is supposed to handle that. Whatever's left over is pretty small-- just some NPCs , a record or two for containers, and some other category I forget what-- it takes less than a minute to correct, and I've done it so often now I could probably do it in my sleep. ;) At least we have Tes5Edit so we don't have to keep breaking out the CK: Morrowind modding hasn't anything similar, according to a friend, which makes modding it a pain.

BTW, rootsrat, I understand you use quite a lot of mods in addition to SR: Have you tried using Nuska's Ethereal Elven Overhaul, by any chance? I was thinking of patching it up since it's not been updated to account for recent things, but... Feel free to move your answer to a PM or something, since this is rather off topic.

Hm, that makes sense... I may run Merged Patch and then just copy the relevant stuff into my own patch, just to keep number of ESPs as low as possible.

Regarding Elven Overhaul, see my post here :)

I'm currently in the process of re-installing Skyrim. I've not updated most of my mods since getting Dragonborn (haven't had a chance to play it yet), and I figured it was a good time to start fresh. I'm also taking the opportunity to switch over to Mod Organizer, something I've been wanting to do for awhile now.

So far I'm really loving MO. I've watched some tutorials and read the guide, but really almost everything has felt very intuitive and straightforward. I like the way the downloads work and being able to review the file structure/contents prior to installing the mod. And the ability to create profiles is awesome (this is actually the best feature of MO and one of the primary reason that I've been wanting to switch). I do have a couple of questions, though. I have a feeling the answers should be pretty obvious, but I've been searching for awhile and can't find the answers, and I'd rather not have to figure it out through trial and error.

When installing a mod that has files outside of the data folder (for example Borderless Window or Double Cursor Fix), how do I install these through MO? Do I manually copy the files that need to go into the Skyrim folder, then use MO for the files that get placed in the Data folder? Second, when I run the CK or TES5Edit through MO and make changes to an existing mod, where are those changes saved? I'm sort of assuming that the changes are getting made to the original file (the one saved in the ModOrganizer/mods folder), and will therefore also apply to any and all profiles using that mod, but I'm not certain of this.

Any new files you create in T5E are saved in MO Overwrites folder.  I'm sort of assuming that the changes are getting made to the original file (the one saved in the ModOrganizer/mods folder), and will therefore also apply to any and all profiles using that mod, but I'm not certain of this. - Correct. Note the ini files are separate for each profile (and lcoated in MO/Profiles/ProfileName)

For file like borderless window or double cursor fix, I just installed like any other mod. It works. Used correctly MO leaves you actual skyrim directory untouched, except for SKSE and any ENB you install. When making changes using TES5Edit the files are stored in their original directory, unless you are making patches. If you are making patches, they are stored in your MO\overwrite directory and then you have to move them to the proper MO\mods\ folder.

Just one more thing - if you use any SkyProc patchers, I would recommend installing them via MO, but then manually creating SkyProc patchers folder in MO overwrites and copying all the patchers there, and aging executables to MO from the overwrites folder. A few people were having problems with the patchers if they were done from MO mods folder. I actually did the same for FNIS just to be on the safe side.

Yup, Automatic Variants prefers to exist in Overwrite only, I had it in mods and it would take forever to open and close. It kept trying to move the textures back and forth but they would technically exist already so it would spam it's debug log with messages saying so.

Also note if you have TES5Edit set to backup a plugin you edit then save, it will end up in MO\Overwrite and the backup will be under MO\Overwrite\TES5Edit Backups. It will move (remove) the esp from the mod directory as well.

Unchecking backup will leave the original esp in the mod folder and place the edited copy in Overwrite.
