Step Mod Curation

A curating service for Mod Authors

A service that Step Modifications offers to the Mod Author community is Mod Curation. This is very similar to Nexus Mod's "The Care Taker", with some differences. Since Step operates under "cathedral modding" principles, mods provided for Mod Curation are converted to "open permissions." In contrast, "The Care Take" will keep the mod's current permissions "as is." While the mods are converted to open permissions under Mod Curation, Step still reserves Curatorship rights of the original mods.

The most substantial reason Step retains Curatorship rights is so that Step can ensure the mods curated are maintained and updated. This is to directly address the issue of mods becoming stagnate and eventually unusable due to mod Authors retiring.

Finally, choosing Step's Mod Curation over "The Care Taker" program allows Step to benefit from Nexus Mod's reward system. Step Modifications is a legally registered non-profit, which operates on donations. Step only exists because of the support of the community. Therefore, mods that are under Mod Curation will be opt-in to this system. Step refunds these points from time to time to help cover server and software operating expenses. Which may include expansions to our services as needs arise.

All Staff members under the Step umbrella, including board members, are volunteers and are never paid.

Terms & Conditions[edit | edit source]

Authors who provide any mod to Step Modifications (herein referred to as "Step") for Mod Curation transfers ownership of said mod(s), as is, and without limitations to Step. This transfer is complete upon a Nexus Mods staff member moving ownership of mods from Author's Nexus Mods account to the StepModifications Nexus Mods account. Nexus Mods will not complete transfer without written permission from the Author; therefore, Nexus Mods shall be considered the third-party mediator of this transfer of ownership.

Step does not retain ownership of any mod(s) provided for Mod Curation. Since Step operates under "cathedral modding" principles, any mod(s) provided for Mod Curation are converted to "open permissions"OpenPerms, while Step maintains "Curatorship rights"Curatorship of said mod(s). All deviations and forks of said mod(s) resulting from such permission conversions shall only be permissible if deviations and forks are equally released under "open permissions".

Any mod(s) provided to Step for Mod Curation may or may not be updated and/or expanded upon by Step. If such takes place, the mod(s) will reset to Step's Versioning Scheme.

Any mod(s) provided to Step for Mod Curation will be opted-in for Nexus Mods Donation Points (DP), which are refunded by Step to help cover server and software operating expenses. Authors who do not wish for Step to earn DP from any mod(s) they provide for Mod Curation, must state so before the transfer of ownership is complete. Step will honor all these requests.

Provide a mod to Step[edit | edit source]

Proving a mod to Step for Mod Curation is simple and only takes a couple PMs.

  1. Contact Step via email with your desire to provide mod(s) for Curation
  2. Next, contact Nexus Community Manager, Pickysaurus, as they are aware of the Step Nexus Account
    Inform them of your intent of transferring your mods to the Step Account: StepModifications

Mods not accepted for Mod Curation include, but are not limited to:

  • mods containing nudity or sexually explicit content
  • mods containing content not relevant to the game subject (e.g., political mods)

{{#scite:OpenPerms |type=Ref |citation text=Open permissions means there will by no restrictions placed on use of the mod. }}

{{#scite:Curatorship |type=Ref |citation text=Step retains the curator rights to the original mod(s), as they were provided to Step. Step will host the original mod(s) and, solely at Step's discretion, may or may not fix/updated/expand upon said mod(s). }}
