v 0.6.12.3

UPDATE: I have had an HDD fail on me. This would normally not be a problem but I am using a RAID 0. I believe I recovered mostly everything, the guide is unaffected regardless.

Before my next rewrite (another? Yes.) I need to get my format consistent and suited for the entire guide and never have to be rewritten again, hopefully. This means that it has to be incredibly easy to understand, follow, and almost impossible for any info to be missed, even for someone that may skin over everything.
If you are super curious then click here.

Expect this to get out of control and then drawn back... I have a habit of doing that.

If you want to get involved then check out the official subform and if you want to live chat then take a look at Unofficial Chatroom.You can use the history tab to see whats changed but its a lot.
I am actively trying to get this to an "Alpha"(v8) release soon.
Then "beta"(v9) a few weeks later.
I am going to need people to test this once I get to v8+ and eyes are short handed which will make this difficult.

What does this guide entail?

This guide is here to be an up-to-date Oblivion modding guide that is exclusively on STEP, aiming to provide both basic and more sophisticated information for an enhanced Oblivion experience. As well this guide provides a Core setup that is compatible with modular packages and extended modifications suggested, but possibly if not always entirely with your own ideas, too. It does include some recommendations from other guides and credits will be given from where the original content was found.

This is supposed to be community driven, which means the community is going to take charge of how this guide is formatted, the content in the guide such as mod descriptions. If someone has a better way of doing things, then post in the provided topic above.

Mods that are not (yet) included for the time being but are definitely note worthy
  • Better Cities: This is excluded because it will cause the frame rate of the game to drop to around 15fps while in just about any town.
  • Really AEVWD: We didn't find yet a solution that justifies the noticeable framerate drop vs enhanced distant view.
  • Open Cities and Open Cities Reborn: There are several mod-incompatibilities as well as massive frame drops when even close to cities.

Are There Any Tips You Should Know?

Yes, I'll be populating this over time.

Multi Card Issues

Oblivion doesn't handle modern multicard setup very well.
I would say make a custom graphics profile and set it to disable SLI/Crossfire.
Multicard setups will not work in windowed mode.
OBGE shadows will flicker with multicard.

It may be helpful if you add markers at every section

It can get pretty chaotic because of the length of the guide so I would recommend that you add the markers in Wrye Bash.
You can do this by right-clicking on the header bar at the top and selecting "Add Marker":

Example Pictures
Header Bar
File:WyreBash HeaderBar Example.png
Add Marker Highlighted
1,040px
How it looks with a populated Installers Tab
1,040px

I would recommend restarting Wrye Bash often

This is be because Wyre Bash saves the Installers placement, markers and what you had installed/uninstalled when the application is properly closed. This means to restart it before rebuilding the Bashed Patch and/or restarting after adding, installing, removing, changing mods.
Trust me, I got through half an install with out restarting and it messed up everything.

When cleaning the .esp

I would HIGHLY recommend to store the clean .esp in a project that is right after the mod archive. To Create New Project...

Right-Click on the header bar and select Create New Project...
A box will pop up. Rename the project to match that of the mod that you have cleaned.
Leave the Blank .esp ticked.
Move the project to be after/later in the install order so that it overwrites the main .esp
Open the project folder up.
Navigate to the "<Oblivion>\Data"
Move the cleaned .esp to the project folder.
Install the project and this will stop Wrye Bash from overwriting the cleaned version of the .esp

When making .ini edits

I would recommend NOT using the edits in Wrye Bash because Wrye Bash does not use the carriage return making future editing very difficult.

Windows loves to change extentions on files

You may download an .OMOD but then Windows will change the extention of the archive to .zip for some reason.
This is bad because if you uncompress a .zip you will install the files below which will NOT work.

readme
script
image
config
data.crc
data

To fix this make sure you have the "Hide Know Extensions" setting in windows turned off. and simply remove "zip" and type "omod"

Save corruption is a big deal in Oblivion

Apparently save corruption is pretty big in Oblivion here is a list:

Do NOT load a different save without restarting.
You may even crash
Do NOT use autosaves
After you die, restart Oblivion and then reload the latest save
I would say to save in an interior rather than in a city or in Tamriel

There are some common references throughout the guide

"<Oblivion>"

That is your Oblivion install folder.
Some people may choose to install it in a different location or I may change the install location in the future. This makes it so I don't have to edit every set of install instructions when I change it.
Its the same as:
"C:\Games\Oblivion\SteamApps\common\<Oblivion>"

Commonly used console commands

tdetect

Use this to toggle on/off the detection system
Remember it doesn't work 100% of the time

tgm

Use this to toggle on/off god mode
In this you won't take damage, your stamina and magicka won't run out and you don't have a carry limit
Remember it doesn't work 100% of the time

tcl

Use this to toggle on/off the collision
Make sure you don't have anything selected in the console otherwise nothing will happen

tdt

This will toggle on/off the debug text
Press the insert key to cycle through the different types of debug text.

coc

This is used to teleport to a specific cell
It works by typing a correct cell name after it

cow

This is used to teleport to a different worldspace
You would also need a coordinate to teleport to in the new worldspace
It would be in the format of:
"cow <worldspace> <x>,<y>"

Suggested Key Mapping

so far have an idea of what I want it to function like.
Keep in mind I am using just about every mod in this list which my cause some keys to be far away when the closer keys are open.

How is this guide modular?

This guide still needs to be complicated in some sections but eventually the rough points are going to be worked out. Currently, we offer a modular setup built around a Core/Extended with some Optional packs/modules.

Green Box.png The Green Squares are Core:

  • Is required.
  • They mainly indicate a mod containing fixes, texture replacers, improvements of all sorts that are all about keeping that Oblivion feel, but updated (Lore-friendly).
  • They indicate a mod that is content of a basic setup that can be extended and built upon.
  • Install these if you use your own mod list or plan to use moduls from this guide.
  • Performance options are noted, where possible.

Yellow Box.png The Yellow Squares are Extended:

  • They indicate a mod enhancing the Oblivion feeling further.
  • Most of them are not designed for low-end systems.
  • Some of them are heavy on your system or the game-engine.
  • Some of them are not necessarily Lore-friendly.
  • Some of them require configuration ability and a deeper understanding of modding.

Orange Box.png The Orange Squares:

  • Entirely your choice.
  • The extra on top of Core/Extended improvements.
  • Some of them are not Lore-friendly at all.
  • Packages for all kind of complicated game-play enhancers.
  • Packages for housing, followers, survival.
  • Packages designed for diverse play-styles.
  • Designed for compatibility with the entire guide allowing even more freedom of choice.
  • Some of them are heavy on your system and the game-engine.
  • Some of them require configuration ability and a deeper understanding of modding and patching.
  • May have little support for because of lack of knowledge and testing.

Red Box.png The Red Squares:

  • May or may not be usable due to limited instructions for installation and patches.
  • Tested a very small amount or not at all.
  • May have issues that are unexpected.
  • May have drastic performance decrease.
  • May have little to no support.

Blue Box.png The Blue Squares are Dependent:

  • Is going to be on most patches
  • Marks the mod as dependent
  • If you are using any of the required mods then you must use the mod marked with blue

No Square or "Invisible":

  • Not yet included
  • I haven't decided
  • Waiting for opinions on
  • Place holder

Preparation & Setup

For the most part Wrye Bash is the main mod manager to use. However, a few mods will require TMM (TES Mod Manager) since installing them can be tricky or even impossible otherwise. Mod Organizer is not supported (yet) by this guide for the tool still needs too many workarounds if used with Oblivion, and some of the tasks necessary are simply not yet possible to perform in an efficient manner. Until some of the issue are fixed, I will not be using or supporting it for use in this guide.

System Requirements

System requirements for this guide do differ quite a bit from the Vanilla (not-modded) Oblivion ones you find on the store page of Steam. This is, because this guide will add diverse visual enhancements that require better hardware than Vanilla does.

Note: Oblivion does have an engine limitation. This guide and your performance is likely going to be varied from computer-to-computer. I will try to find the optimum mods that still run and feel good but provide the best visual experience for most higher-end systems.

Hardware Minimum Recommended
Windows OS Windows XP Windows 7/8/8.1
CPU Intel Core i3 (dual core) Intel Core i5/i7 (quadcore)
GPU 1GB VRAM ≥1.5GB VRAM
System RAM ≤4GB ≥8GB

On a side note: 64-bit OS is highly recommended when modding Oblivion. However, the executable of the game addresses <~2gb of memory usage only and was never updated from Bethesda to have the LAA (Large Address Aware) flag in the executable. If you are running a 32-bit OS the patch won't have any effect. In this case, you might consider to be selective on Extended options.

Windows Folder Options

IMPORTANT:
Windows Folder Options should be adjusted as follows:

Check Show hidden files, folders, or drives
Un-Check Hide extensions for known file types

Folder Options are typically found if you open Start → Computer → Organize (upper left corner) → Folder and Search Options → Tab 'View'

  • This can be reverted post-installation.

If you have modded Oblivion before

Please, follow the instructions above. Sometimes mod managers in generally do not remove and replace the modded files. This may cause something to not work correctly or other weirdness. This is to provide you with the best support that Red and I can.

The reason for starting over.
This gives us a starting point.

This pretty much means remove everything (Games files, inis, custom graphics profiles, downloaded mods, etc.). If you wish to back up your files then do so now.

  • Back up locations:
"<Oblivion install>"
"<My Games>\Oblivion"
"<YourUserName>\AppData\Local\Oblivion"
  • Deactivate all mods using your choice of mod manager.
  • Browse to your Oblivion directory and delete all files and sub-directories.
  • Open Steam, right-click Oblivion in your Library → Delete Local Content → Delete. Wait until the game has been uninstalled.
  • Navigate to "<YourUserName>\AppData\Local" and delete the Oblivion folder.
  • Go to
"<YourUserName>\(My)Documents\My Games\Oblivion"
Delete the Oblivion folder. It will be regenerated later.
  • Uninstall your previous Mod Manager(s).
  • If you did use Wrye Bash, navigate to
"<Steam>\SteamApps\Common"
Find the folder Oblivion Mods. Backup first if you want to, then delete.
  • If you did use any other mod manager, find and delete (and backup) their mod directories.

Install Oblivion

Oblivion should be installed outside of "Program Files" or "Program Files (x86)" folders. Installation in these folders can cause UAC (User Account Control) to unpleasantly interfere with Oblivion and some of the Utilities.

Change Oblivion's steam install location
In Steam Client:
Steam Tab → Settings → Downloads
[STEAM LIBRARY FOLDERS]
[ADD LIBRARY FOLDER]
Navigate to "C:\Games\"
[SELECT]
[OK]
[CLOSE]
Click [OK] to get back to the games library
Click on The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion
[Install]
Expanded the drop-down list for under Choose location for install:
Select "Install under C:\Games"
[NEXT>]
[NEXT>]
[Install]
The actual install location is:

"C:\Games\Oblivion\SteamApps\common\Oblivion"
Throughout this guide that Oblivion folder is going to be "<Oblivion>"

After Oblivion is done downloading, click [PLAY] in your Steam library. This will bring up the launcher for Oblivion.

  • If dialogue box pops up, select [OK].
  • Click [Options]. Set Video Quality Presets according to your hardware. Ultra High is recommended because most modern hardware can run it just fine.
  • Select Windowed Mode.
  • Select your screen resolution.
For example: 1920x1080 (widescreen)

Note: Screen Effects needs to be set to HDR – this is required for TES4LodGen used later in this guide.

  • I highly suggest doing a backup of your pristine (Vanilla) Oblivion directory for future use.
  • Starting a new game is required in most circumstances.

Suggested: It is a good practice to backup your pristine (Vanilla) Oblivion for future use. For size reduction use 7-zip – download latest stable version here (v9.20 August 2014): 7-zip Org

For this, navigate to:
"<Oblivion>"
"<My Games>/Oblivion"

If you want to use 7-zip to archive your game files then copy both of the folders above and add to and archive. If you are going to compress the files using 7-zip then use the Ultra setting.

Open Steam, right-click Oblivion in your Library → Properties → General → enable "Steam Overlay while ingame". This is needed for OBSE.

Recommended: While still in Steam, right-click Oblivion in your Library → Properties → Updates → Un-Check "Enable Steam Cloud synchronization for The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion"

INI Tweaks

Note: After you are done with editing Oblivion.ini, right-click the file → Properties → check: read-only.
This is to prevent the launcher and Streamline from resetting it.

Basic INI Tweaks

If you hate windows Notepad, try out Notepad++

[General]
SIntroSequence=

Disables the intro-movies playing every time you start Oblivion.

[General]
SMainMenuMovieIntro=

If you like to disable the Oblivion menu-intro as well.

[Display]
iShadowMapResolution=1024

I believe Arthmoor said to change this because there are issues with the default 256.

[Controls]
bUse Joystick=0

Add this tweak if you don't use a game pad. If you are using a game pad, I would recommend using external software and still use this tweak.

[Water]
bUseWaterReflectionsMisc=1
bUseWaterReflectionsStatics=1
bUseWaterReflectionsTrees=1
bUseWaterReflectionsActors=1

Water will reflect static objects (like houses and sky), trees and NPC's. This setting will impact about 5-25% frames/sec – consider turning back off (=0) if you experience unwanted low frames/sec.

[Main]
bEnableBorderRegion=0

This disables the invisible borders in Tamriel. There is not much beyond, though. It may be needed for mods that are part of non-core. Be aware of the in-game map to show if you are in the borders of Tamriel because there isn't anything special outside the borders.

[Gameplay]
bSaveOnTravel=0
bSaveOnWait=0
bSaveOnRest=0
bSaveOnInteriorExteriorSwitch=0

This disables autosaving which is known to produce corrupt (unplayable) savegames over time.

[Grass]
iMaxGrassTypesPerTexure=7

Increases grass diversity with a small cost to performance and yup, "texure" and not "texture".
Consider 5 or 7 if using grass retexture mods.

[Archive]
SInvalidationFile=

Yes, there needs to be nothing.

[BackgroundLoad]
bBackgroundLoadLipFiles=1
bLoadBackgroundFaceGen=1
bBackgroundCellLoads=1
bLoadHelmetsInBackground=1
[Pathfinding]
bBackgroundPathing=1

These tweaks supposedly help with reducing stutter and smooth FPS.
I cannot confirm this.

Memory INI Tweaks

Template:Notice Small The memory tweaks described below are controversial, meaning there is no real exact amount but only trial and error.
Tests done in the past with or without memory tweaks are located HERE.
Take a look:

http://forums.bethsoft.com/topic/1176244-oblivion-and-memory-usage/
http://www.tweakguides.com/Oblivion_9.html

[General]
iPreloadSizeLimit=104857600
The rule of thumb I agree with is set as low as possible but still maintaining smooth stutter-less gameplay.
(26214400)∗X
1≤X≤10, X∈ℕ

Use these numbers to start with. You might need to experiment to find a good value. The lower the number the better.:

Core: X=4
Extended: X=6
Entire list: X=8

Jaga Telesin's explanation:
iPreLoadSizeLimit is one of those things people thinks work like a regular "cache", when in fact it does not. Larger values in this setting are WORSE for players since the 1.2.x patch. Martigen and I spent a week straight looking into this and a few other performance related INI values, and in fact it's better to keep it lower if possible. The right number is something you arrive at based on what you are using. The default value of 26214400 can be equated to one "unit" of cache. To find out how many units you need, refer to the following list:
  • (+1) Vanilla Oblivion + 30 or less mods (all small)
  • (+1) OOO, Fran's, Warcry (not FCOM)
  • (+1) MMM (not FCOM)
  • (+2) FCOM
  • (+1) QTP1 (or similar normal-size texture pack)
  • (+2) QTP2 (or similar medium-size texture pack)
  • (+3-4) QTP3 (or other large-size texture pack)

So for example, someone running Oblivion, a few small mods, OOO and MMM would need a setting of: 1+1+1 (3x default) or 78643200. Generally this floats up and down by 1x, so that person might be able to get away with 2x instead, which is BETTER than 3x. You know you are too low when just after changing it and reloading the game, you start stuttering badly.
A machine with more than 2gb of RAM doesn't need to set their cache at 1gb, that's just insane. They need instead to evaluate what they run and see what setting value they need. If they had Oblivion+mods, FCOM, and QTP3 they would need: 1+2+3, or around 6x default (157286400), which is roughly 153mb of Oblivion cache.

Everyone's experience is unique, so people will have to play with their settings to get it just right. Too large and you will get problems, too small and you'll get different problems with similar symptoms (stutter and lag). Finding the sweet spot is what tweaking this entry is all about. My numbers are just a rough guide, and are by no means the final word on the setting."

Hishutup
My X is (7) and the value is set to (183500800)

Any decent system for today should be fine with setting this higher than vanilla.

INI Tweaks that affect FPS

[General]
uGridDistantCount=25
This affects the distance at which the lod load for buildings. This is the safe LOD tweak when its between 25 and 15.

If you have trouble with unusually low performance then reduce to 20 or even 15.

TES4LODGen
  • Author: ElminsterAU
  • Version: 3.0.32EXP
  • Forum Link
  • Description:
  • What is LOD/VWD?
LOD (.lod) data files are necessary to view landscapes that are distant in the middle- or background. These are different than the static objects you see from far – also
known as 'Visible while Distant' objects (VWD). Not all mod (replacer) packages do provide all necessary files related to LOD/VWD and therefor the player runs into
strange views. Or bugs.
LOD is built on the basis of quadrants of four adjoining blocks of 32x32 cells. Now, as landscape mods and such changing exterior cells are added, these quadrants realign
themselves. Further they depend highly on loadorder and the heightmap used in each cell. However technical all this sounds, this results in the necessity to rebuild LOD
every time a mod is added, removed or changed in both loadorder and installationorder that affects these quadrants – like for example 'Qarls Texture Pack' or 'RAEVWD'. The
tools for this are known as 'LOD Generators'.
  • Notes: TES4LODgen MUST be ran every time load order changes, also if you change something in your Installertab that affects related LOD files. This includes that one tiny file called 'bashed patch' at the very end. If you fail to do this, your game wont crash nor will your savegames be destroyed but distant meshes will be strange, out of line or simply not appear.

Cleaning the DLC

This is a required step and should be done regardless of whether you are going to follow this guide or if you are even going to mod your game. Cleaning DLC .esp's and certain mods is critical for creating a stable modded game environment. Template:Notice Small

If you are NOT familiar with cleaning, click me.
Note: Some mods have "UDR(s)" or "ITM(s)" but must not be cleaned. Follow BOSS report unless other wise described for a particular mod.

  • Reminders are going to be located after installation description of mods that do need cleaning.

"Undelete and Disable References" are referred to as
"UDR(s)"
"Identical to Master" records are referred to as
"ITM(s)"

Downsampling

This is a tweak for mid-high end PCs with respective graphics cards. If you do not believe you can run it then skip this.
Downsampling is when a game is rendered at a greater resolution compared to what it is displayed at.
This is the only way to have downsampling work on AMD but nVidia have other options.
For Example:
I am using a 1920x1080 display on an AMD 6970 but the game is rendered at 3840x2160 because of the engine limitation in a short test I gained a frame which should be incorrect.

The examples used are to show my setup, yours may differ.
In the Oblivion.ini set what resolution you want the game to be rendered at.

iSize W=3840
iSize H=2160

In the ENBLocal.ini

AddDisplaySuperSamplingResolutions=true

Start the game and see if it works. If it doesn't then try boarderless windowed fullsceen.

Known Problems:

Causes textures to appear sparkly.
Mouse in menus is slow
Steam in-game interface has tiny text.

How to add BOSS Rules

Launch BOSS GUI.exe

Located in C:\BOSS\

In BOSS GUI.exe

Click [Edit User Rules]
In the installed plugins list on the right-hand side find the mod that you are trying to sort or copy/paste the mod name from the guide and paste it into the "For" field.
Make sure you include both the name and the .esp at the end.
Check Sort Item
There are two options:
  1. "before" and "after" is to sort by plugin
  2. "top" and "bottom" is to sort by category
The second field is the one that is inline of the button that you had selected
In that field find the category in the "Masterlist" tab or copy/paste what I have on the guide
Click [Create New Rule]
After you are finished adding the rules
Click [Save and Exit]
Run BOSS if you choose to

This is a good time to back up the entire Oblivion Install

Why?

Because everything is set up. If you screw up down the road then uninstall all the active mods, replace all the Oblivion folders including my games and the Oblivion Installation folder.
Its better to archive the folders afterward to prevent from accidentally moving the files rather than copy from a backup folder verse archive.

iReflectionMapSize=2048

I would recommend a value between vanilla (256) and 2k (2048).
Personally I use 2048 because it removes the terrible vanilla reflection quality.

This changes the LOD bias for textures. I recommend anywhere between 0 to -1.
