START FRESH

Installation

It is always best to start with a clean setup when starting any guide. Modding can have unintended effects sometimes... if in doubt, start from scratch and re-download and re-install. Steam and Skyrim SE should be installed outside of your Program Files directory. A separate SSD hard drive is the best case scenario.

The SkyRem guide is currently built using: Skyrim Special Edition v1.5.80

Initialize

Create your INI files, turn off the Steam Overlay, and disable Automatic Updates in Steam.

1. [Launch] Skyrim through Steam to complete setup of INI files.
2. [Exit] the Skyrim Launcher (not Steam) - we will setup INIs later).
3. Click [Steam] and [Settings] in the tool bar.
4. Select the [In-Game] tab and untick the [Enable the Steam Overlay while in-game].
5. Right-click [Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition] and select [Properties].
6. Navigate to the [Updates] tab, and under [Automatic Updates], change the drop-down to [Only update this game when I launch it].
7. [Exit] Steam.

Creation Kit

The CK is needed for several modding functions, including creating mods. For the purpose of this guide, it will be needed to properly convert mods from LE to SE. As with Skyrim, there is is some setup that needs to be completed for it to work properly.

1. If you do not have it, download and install Bethesda.net Launcher.
2. [Launch] Bethesda.net and [Click] the CK icon on the side bar.
3. [Launch] the CK - when asked to Extract scripts, click [YES]. This may take a few minutes.
4. Navigate to the Skyrim Folder - you should see the CreationKit.exe now. Create a new Text file and name it CreationKitCustom.ini.
5. Copy and paste the lines in the following box into the file, save, and exit.
[General]
bAllowMultipleMasterFiles=1
bAllowMultipleMasterLoads=1

[MESSAGES]
bBlockMessageBoxes=1

Setup your INI files:

Open Skyrim through Steam using the Launcher in order to set your base INI files. You do not have to go in-game, just run the launcher and Exit.
You can leave your settings at the system determined defaults for now. We will adjust these later.

Turn off Auto-Updates

This will prevent Skyrim from updating automatically, which is necessary in order to prevent version conflicts with mods (particularly SKSE)
Right-Click The [Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Special Edition] and select [Properties]
Navigate to the [UPDATES] tab
Under [Automatic Updates], change the drop-down box to [Only update this game when I launch it]

Install Creation Kit

Install the Bethesda.Net Launcher
Run the Creation Kit Launcher and select [Yes] to extracting the scripts
In your Skyrim folder (folder with CreationKit.exe and SkyrimSE.exe), create a CreatKitCustom.ini text file.
Change the extension from .txt to .ini
Edit the newly created CreationKitCustom.ini file, copy and paste the following, then save and close:
[Archive]
SResourceArchiveList2=Skyrim - Voices_en0.bsa, Skyrim - Textures0.bsa, Skyrim - Textures1.bsa, Skyrim - Textures2.bsa, Skyrim - Textures3.bsa, Skyrim - Textures4.bsa, Skyrim - Textures5.bsa, Skyrim - Textures6.bsa, Skyrim - Textures7.bsa, Skyrim - Textures8.bsa, Skyrim - Patch.bsa, Dawnguard.bsa, Hearthfires.bsa, Dragonborn.bsa

[Audio]
bEnableAudio=1

[General]
bAllowMultipleMasterFiles=1
bAllowMultipleMasterLoads=1

[Grass]
bAllowCreateGrass=1
bAllowLoadGrass=0

[MESSAGES]
bBlockMessageBoxes=1

SKYRIM SCRIPT EXTENDER (SKSE)

Download Skyrim Script Extender (SKSE). Extract the files and move the following to your Skyrim folder:

- skse64_1_5_73.dll
- skse64_loader.exe
- skse64_steam_loader.dll

Return to where you extracted the files and Archive the Data folder. Install this as a new mod through MO2 (second icon in the menu bar). Name the mod SKSE Scripts.
