Random CTD - New Game, STEP Extended

Lunaus

Question

Hello, I'm fairly new to this forum as well as using STEP. I'll admit the whole "STEP Core" vs "STEP Extended" is rather confusing and I might've messed up completely in following either. Here's a link to all my files (mod list, load order, and Skyrim.ini/SkyrimPrefs.ini) -> Click.

Before I started experiencing these CTDs I was having issues with getting my fire textures to load, a lot of the threads here said it was because of Deadly Spelling Impacts and after adding/removing/changing that multiple times I found the answer was with my END not liking one of STEPs suggested SkyrimPref changes dealing with Antialiasing (instead of it being 4 I had to set it to 0 for my ENB to be happy). So once that was sorted and all done is when I started getting the CTDs, and there's really nothing I can think of. I have the SKSE.ini all set up with these values:

[spoiler=SKSE.ini][Display]
iTintTextureResolution=2048

[General]
ClearInvalidRegistrations=1

[Memory]
Enable=1
MemBlock1=512
MemBlock2=256
DefaultHeapInitialAllocMB=768
ScrapHeapSizeMB=256

[Debug]
WriteMinidumps=1

I now have MemoryBlocksLog installed (manually outside of MO) and will test my game again. The CTD doesn't have any spefici timing or area it happens, it just happens. Before a save, while walking, standing still and waiting for the dragon attack during the beginning of Helgen.

I plan on adding mods on top of STEP so the sooner I figure things out the better! And less head ache I'll have as I haven't been able to play Skyrim for about a year now because of modlist order and load order (and little help from the Nexus forum users).

EDIT: Just attached my first MemoryBlockLog hope it helps with something.. I can also provide Papyrus logs too if need be.

Also, and this is a bit off-topic from my original problem, can I get help as to why the in-game counters for Skyrim Performance Monitor aren't showing up when using the hotkey assigned by default?

This may or may not help but I was unable to make it into Helgen using the vanilla start if I had Audio Overhaul Skyrim (AOS.esp) installed, it would crash just before or as the gate starts to open (I'd get at most half a second of the gate sound play before the crash).

At the time the setup was purely from Skyrim Revisited: Legendary Edition, minus Alternate Start to see if the cart ride was even possible. The other reason I tried the cart ride was because every two out of three attempts to start a new game would cause an instant CTD as soon as it was about to pop me into the starter cell and open the racemenu. That CTD has also gone away since removing AOS. So it might be worth a try, I did have to recreate the Real Shelter patch, but it was the only thing that had AOS as a master.

As for Skyrim Performance Monitor, I think there is an experimental setting to allow it to work with your ENB (if you are running one). If you aren't running an ENB that it might be conflicting with, I think SPM has, somewhere, a list of reasons the overlay does not show up.

Misc Somewhat related rambling:

It is entirely possible that my crash was just one of those strange interactions where AOS has to load above or below a certain mod (I sort with LOOT) and I may one day try and resolve it but for now I just want to play :) I'm anxious to see if the occasional random but definitely not memory or vram related crashes have gone away as well, though I doubt it, Skyrim probably does it just to annoy me.

I haven't had issues with AOS, but before STEP I used Sounds of Skyrim, I don't really care too much for audio but I enjoyed it nonetheless I don't really notice much of an audio difference with AOS installed. At this point though I just need help with my Load/Mod order to get my custom game working.

In Mod Organizer, do you have a clean STEP:Extended profile (meaning only STEP recommended mods and settings), or did you add in non-STEP mods while building your STEP install?  It's highly recommended to build your STEP install in one profile, then when you're ready to add non-STEP mods, you make a copy of your STEP profile to mess around with when installing additional mods.  This is so that if you do start getting CTD's and other issues that you can't fix, you can always delete the messed up profile, returning to a stable STEP install.

According to your Memory Blocks Log, you weren't hitting the Memory limit, though you were getting close to it, presuming you haven't done the SKSE tweak to raise it to 512.

Given your comment in your opening post that you might have messed things up as the STEP Core/Extended distinction can be confusing, one suggestion might be to wipe clean Mod Organizer (or if space isn't an issue, install Mod Organizer a second time) and rebuild a STEP Profile from a clean slate.  Before installing any non-step mods, give the game a quick run through (the Helgen intro and an hour or two wandering around Skyrim) to see if any CTD's or other issues come up.  If you do get issues with just a step install, that does narrow it down.  Otherwise, if STEP is stable, start reinstalling mods a few at a time on a separate profile, and test out to see if any issues come up.

I do have separate profiles, and I've played at least an hour or so with just the STEP Recommended mods installed (minus the ones included in STEP: Extended patch). Though I did try and use Texure Optimizer because the instructions on how to use DSopt were confusing and a bit unclear.. So I don't know if the textures in any of my mods are corrupt or not because of that. I'll look into installing STEP over again with a clean MO install.

I'm still crashing and I don't know if it's my mod/load order or my PC. Currently my game runs at 50~60 FPS with this new setup I recently tested located here: https://modwat.ch/Lunaus#modlist (NSFW mods installed) but when I use a save from pure vanilla at the character creation part of Helgen my game doesn't progress when I should be going to the chopping block. So I restart use Alternate Start and choose when I wanna be in the beginning and then whenever I see Bandits I crash before or after they engage on me. Not a lot of the mods I have installed have any type of load order recommendation or MO mod order recommendation so a lot of what I do is guess work and up until the past two years the only thing I did to get my game running as far as mods go is install through NMM and run the game without any CTD issues.

hmm...
try setting

ExpandSystemMemoryX64=false

VideoMemorySizeMb=8192
EnableCompression=false
AutodetectVideoMemorySize=false

you have FixParallaxTerrain enabled. I dont know if you have that intentionally on but if you didnt know why your landscape textures looked bugged out, it would be because of that setting. Most landscape texture overhauls are missing the textures to make the parallax work.

Oh I fixed the textures awhile ago, I even started a new MO install with new downloads for STEP I also followed some of the STEP packs as far as mod order goes for some mods (the ones not already in STEP Core) and I get CTDs but I've gone hours without one for awhile then later I constantly CTD'd for god knows what reason.

Also should I be setting the System mem to false? My OS is 64bit, does that have any correlation to crashing?
