Problem with Wrye Bash and Step Extended Patch.esp = CTD during Character Creation

BlessedBlogger

Question

Please forgive me, I don't know anything about modding and I'm not great with computers. I've spent the last four days installing and meticulously making sure I've done everything exactly as instructed in the STEP 2.2.9 guide to set up STEP: Extended on a clean fresh install of Skyrim. Between MO, LOOT, FNIS, Wrye Bash and Tes5Edit it's been a steep learning curve for me and I'm overwhelmed.Wrye Batch shows the Step Extended Patch.esp file as red, which I think means it's missing some master files. I'm also getting some errors in other places. It's probably easier if I just show you.I've also attached a text doc of my mod list, which is almost entirely STEP:Extended Mods, in case that helps. If there's a better way to show my mod list please let me know.I'm at my wits end and any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time and assistance!

Ok so I dont know if this is a fact or if there is another reason but some say to "Sort Masters" because out of order master can cause crashes... I haven't found/discovered any proof yet. If there is please share.

Out of order masters is the orange color in WryeBash.

To "Sort Master" open Tes5Edit like you are going to clean the mod and the right click after Tes5Edit finishes its background loader and click on [sort Masters]

Close Tes5Edit and save the plugin

The once out of order (orange) plugin will now be green

Is your crashing gone?..

Or do you think it is temporary?

Ok first take a pic of your Achives tab in MO then

They are red because that is the mod that overwrites the X file.

This isn't bad and because you followed STEP I would say its safe to assume there are no bad conflicts...

hmm, is your card one with 1GB VRAM or greater

After doing the above please make a new post or edit your previous.

If its greater then you're more than fine but if it isn't then try disabling the larger texture mods...

I think if you disable all the mods that are located in 2.F. Conflicting Graphics, then test it again.

If you are still having trouble then start disabling mods...

You should also uncheck DSR, Bashed patch and the Extended patch during testing and rebuilding will be temporarily unnecessary.

This is fine for testing but don't keep the save and always start a new game.

Leave Alternate start checked, its safe.

Start with Enhanced Blood and Better Shock and Freeze effects

Then start disabling large groups of mods till you fine your problem maker

After this I am running out of ideas...

If someone has any idea, please speak up, I would appreciate it.

EDIT: Exactly what Nozzer66 said... It is strange... The next stop, Mo weirdness

All right ladies/gents, I have 2GB of VRAM so that's not the problem, so we're down to turning off/on mods to narrow it down. I've unchecked the files you said I could turn off to save time and I'm going to run the game with no mods at all to see if the problem is perhaps with the Skyrim install and not the mods and if that works I'll move on from there. If the game crashes even with no mods on, is there any way to reinstall the game without having to go through and reinstall all 277 STEP mods or will I just have to bite the bullet and reinstall from scratch?

Yes there's a way. Copy the current STEP profiile to a new profile. Name it 'testing' or similar.

Then start a game using that profile, and disable mods there, test and see how you go.

If/When you find the culprit, go back to your STEP profile, fix what's needed and away you go. You can then delete the 'testing' profile at your leisure.

Another thing you could maybe try is copying the ini files, keep them somewhere safe like the desktop. Then go to Steam, and verify integrity of game cache. Let Steam do its thing, if it finds a dodgy game file, it'll fix it. Then boot the game in vanilla and see if all is fine.

If so, and I suspect it will be, you can start adding mods back in via the STEP MO Profile. Copy back in your previously saved tweaked inis. and just steadily add a mods section, jump into game, see if you're stable. If so, move onto the next one, rinse, repeat.

Still strange you're having issues...

It took me all night but I've finally got it narrowed down. The following mods are causing problems:

1. Audio Overhaul for Skyrim - Was causing some weird mouse lag that would make it seem like my mouse cursor was stuck on something and then abruptly let go and then get stuck and let go etc. It made it impossible to move or select things with the mouse. After checking all the other mods and repatching I tried this mod again and it suddenly worked with no mouse lag.

2. Consistent Older People 22a All NPCs CRF BOYD Compatible - This is the file that STEP instructs you to install in section 2.D. Fixed. When testing mods to see which ones caused problems, this one caused me to crash on startup of the game. I tested it three times and it always crashed. When I finished finding the other wonky mods I decided to give this one another shot to be sure and for no reason that I know, it no longer causes me to crash. It seems stable for now so for the time being I'll leave it enabled.

3. Immersive Hud - Makes my crosshairs blink on and off whether I'm facing something I can interact with or not. Maybe this is intentional, I don't know. I fixed it by changing the settings within the mod settings in the game to have the crosshairs always on.

4. Nightingale Price HD - I can't recall if it was causing me to crash or have the mouse stutter lag. Whatever, it started working too. Starting to think I'm loosing my marbles at this point.

5. Improved Horse Step Sound - Same as 4. Definitely going bonkers.

6. FNIS - This was the mod causing me to crash to desktop when I would get close to Helgen. After checking that all other mods worked properly, including those listed above which previously malfunctioned, I enabled FNIS again and, you guessed it, it worked. Who knows? My best guess is that I'm under a gypsy curse or something. Maybe I was running the patches in the wrong order or maybe the universe just likes to mess with me. Either way it seems to be working. I'll start a new game this afternoon and see if it still works. As for me I have to get some sleep.

Thank you both again, you guys were awesome!

My overwrite folder is empty. STEP has you create a dummy folder for each mod (FNIS, DSR and Bash) that put files in your Overwrite folder when you rebuild the patches for those mods. It tells you to put the files generated from that process in the corresponding dummy folder, so my Overwrite is empty. Is that what you meant? Or do you mean I should empty the dummy folders? Sorry if I'm being dense. You really have to explain this stuff to me like you would a child, step by step, or I just won't understand.

Its no biggie... This is a pretty unique issue.

The sad part is I can almost guarantee that its something super simple. I am pretty sure I covered almost everything though.

As for the dummy folders:

Oh, I never do that but thats me... So, I guess disable both DSR and FNIS dummy folders and start your game with all the mods except the skeleton mod... --what is it XP32 Maximum compatibility skeleton.--

EDIT: None of those mods ever have issues... Well, except FNIS under certain circumstances

Heh, I've never had an issue with FNIS, but it has been known to happen, apparently.

Touch wood it's all OK now and you can get on with beating the snot out of Alduin. :)

It's also just possible that you may have had an issue with the bashed patch, but that's an educated guess at best...

The reason is because I was kinda stumped because I removed the custom skeleton and a few other things and the previously generated FNIS files caused a CTD in game.

Maybe there is an error or something... I am almost out of ideas

After this maybe something is OC'd and unstable.

I had my processor around 4.2 GHz and it did fine in most games but had some strange effects with skyrim. --I knew about how unstable it was but never connected it--
