Computers--- I just can't catch a break. Need tech help to get STEP to work again.

Question

OK, so a few months ago I got the advance STEP install working pretty much perfectly. No joke. I had a glorious month or so of gaming. Then, as it did six months or so before, my computer took a dump and died. Won't go into the details, but they were BSOD issues which I addressed. Then more BSOD issues. I got fed up and sold all the components piecemeal, but kept the PSU (1200W) and the kick-ass GPUs (2x EVGA 680 FTW 4G cards) and the drives.

A friend helped me build a kick-ass system and it's now up and running. I am using a different drive as my C drive b/c I wasn't confident in the health of the SSD that was my C drive before.

Here's where STEP comes in:

I have my full STEP install on a hybrid SHHD drive. Files:

DDSopt

Mod Organizer

skyrim backup files

Steam>common>Skyrim (main folder has among other folders, BOSS, Mopy, SweetFX, etc)

and Skyrim mods

Wrye Bash

I pretty much did ALL my Skyrim install to this HSSD drive. I think I even installed and ran Steam from this drive. Windows 7 was not installed on this drive, but was the old SSD (that I'm no longer using).

So, fast forward...I now have that HSSD instaled on my computer.

I'd like to get Skyrim back and running and pick up where I left off. I suppose I could start a new game if necessary. The main thing is that I want to get all the components working as they should.  I've no idea where to begin. I don't want to install Steam even until I'm sure of how I need to do this. I am now running Windows 8.1. I don't have it in me to do another STEP install.

Thanks!

Oh and to clarify-- Windows 8.1 is now installed on a RAID setup of 4 SSDs.

MO is portable so as long as it's still intact you should be able to run it once you have Steam and Skyrim reinstalled. When you first only MO it will tell you it can't find Skyrim and you'll simply have to point it to the new directory. Then do the same for your executables, if needed.

I recently did something similar. My OS was installed on one partition and my game and modding stuff on another. Windows 8.1 crapped out on me for the second time so I wiped the partition and installed Windows 7 again. Since MO was installed on another partition, it fired right up and everything was just as it should have been. I simply had to tell it where I installed Skyrim and fix the broken links to the third-party executabels (TES5edit, LOOT, ect) and that was it. I fired my modded Skyrim within a few minutes after installing the game.

I also had my saved games backed up and it loaded those once I restored them without issue.

  • Manually copy the Skyrim folder to where you want to place it, making sure it is in the root drive like this: C:SteamSteamAppscommonskyrim
  • Install Steam to the location of Steam you set up in step 1 (C:Steam)
  • In your Steam Library, go to Skyrim and select Install and direct it to your skyrim installation set up in step 1. This shouldn't take long, as it will essentially verify game cache and install necessary runtimes and be good.
  • Copy DDSOpt to the skyrim directory
  • Copy Mod Organizer to your skyrim directory

Should be okay to run Mod Organizer and play just like back in the olden days.
