Tried removing ENBoost from the equation, CTD'ed.

Question

Posted

Hi all!

I just tried running Skyri after STEP installation without ENBoost, because I wanted to see how big the FPS hit would be. I wanted to try using Vandb pure ENB, which has a low performance hit, and in my humble opinion, looks pretty good. Problem is, that it is version 121212 of enbseries, and I'm told that that version doesn't support ENBoost. I got into the game, and it was pretty good. I was inside a building though(Dragonsreach) so having good FPS in there was expected. So I tried venturing out, and when I was loading Whiterun, I CTD'ed. My save is "clean"(started the character after I was done installing mods), so I don't assume that's the problem. But given that I still had above 40-50 FPS inside(Enhanced Light and FX takes a toll in that building), but normally run a clean 60(using the fps limiter in enblocal.ini), would not having ENBoost on really hit so hard, as to CTD me when being outside(and in a city no less). With the ENBoost on, I run about 25-40 FPS outside.

funny thing I had the exact same thing happen but it was a long time ago... you're probably overloading VRAM or the memory... change the setting to 512, 512 and take a look.

ENBoost does not affect FPS directly. It only helps reduce stuttering etc while loading assets and allows you to run with more stuff then otherwise.

So if you CTD with just a STEP core installation (You do not specificy which STEP guide you followed) without ENBoost then something is most likely not setup properly since that should function even without ENBoost.

Well I have pretty much followed STEP as in the 2.2.9 guide(the "pretty much" being that I have used REDUCED textures on many of the mods), using Extended version. I have some mods of "my own".

I use Grass on Steroids with the density setting in Skyrim.ini set at 100(it's the same as setting it to around 20 without the mod, thus, FPS increase).

I have

- SPERG

- Bandoiler - Pouches and Bags

- Immersive Patrols

- New Animation for Magic Casting

- Dragon Combat Overhaul

- Alternative Start

- Better Skill and Quest Books Names

- The Dance of Death(though I don't even know if this works due to SPERG)

- Skyrim HD Lite(DDSopt optimized) Dungeons only

- Apocalypse Spell Package(no scripts version)

Also, it seems to not be a reproduceable event. I just tried(even with the ENB preset on, and it didn't happen. I did however, confirm that I cannot play with that(or perhaps any) ENB preset and still have a(n?) fps above 20)

Now that I have the attention of someone with the "know-how" of Skyrim modding, I wanted to ask something about the Apocalypse Spell Packaged, that seems like general knowledge, more than specfic knowledge to the mod. It says that "This version of the mod does modify the leveled lists, meaning it will conflict with other mods that change loot tables or vendor inventories. You can create a bashed patch to solve this (google for it)".

Do I need to create another Bashed Patch for such a conflict alone, or is this just referring to using Bashed Patch in general? I have never been sure about what Bashed Patch exactly do, other than solving conflicts of sorts. The reason that I'm unsure about it in this specific instance, is that he/she(mod author) says "a Bashed Patch". Not "the Bashed Patch". Of cause, a/the Bashed Patch is different for every setup, but the procedure is the same I would assume. Do I need to sometimes created Bashed Patches for specific mod(so that I have multiple of them in one setup) or does the Bashed Patch cover everything, everytime?

Find a preset you like and ask how to optimize its performance then. ENB is very modular and it is just silly to drop one you might like due to performance reasons, since that can always be mostly fixed rather easily.

Anyways... if the issue is not reproduceable and does not happen often (every 15 mins or less) then it could just be a random skyrim CTD.. which can happen even in a vanilla game.

As for the bashed patch.. you always should have one and only one on your list.

Essentially you can think about it like this

You got mod A that adds items to a chest, and mod B that adds other items to the same chest.

Without a bashed patch only the mod last in the load order  would contribute items to the chest. By using the bashed patch both mods contribute their items to the chest.

The reason that mod requires you use a bashed patch is because it adds new spells and needs to add them to chests, and vendors etc.

So simply update your bashed patch and return to playing.

Just wanted to jump in out of the blue, like that guy from Kids in the Hall "Brain Candy", and he walks in as the scientist are having a small celebration with there success in the lab, he walks in smiling and cheering, they look at him and say "who are you?". He replies, "Just a guy" and slowly turns and walks away, lol. Anyways, sorry, just wanted to say Aiyen, man I didn't even figure about factoring in skyrim's normal apt for ctd's at any given moment. That whole spiel I went on about diskeeper, and today I did in fact get a random phantom ctd totally out of the blue on my wife's pc. So yeah, I suppose I shouldn't be surprised if I factor in that fact about skyrim. Just wanted to say that. Sorry OP, I am "Just a guy"...walks away slowly. :)

You sir(@Aiyen), are a God sent!

Thank you!

About the ENB, can I ask in the ENB section on these forums, or is it for the purpose of STEP's ENB function?

Well to make sure that it is not memory related etc. then just a simple speedrun stress test

Open the console in the main menu and type

coc riverwood

tgm

player.setav speedmult 500

Run past falkreath to markarth and then to solitude followed by... somewhere else on the other side of the map.

You should do it three or four times and not get any CTD before at least solitude.

Also you can ask any ENB related questions in the support forum. It would have to be really technical for you not to get an answer here.
