STEP extended, when to install Falskaar and Wyrmstooth?

Question

Posted

Just wondering when I should install these mods if I'm using the STEP Extended guide?

My plan was just to install STEP Extended then other mods I want after that (Falskaar, Wyrmstooth, CoT, ELFX and an ENB).

However I was looking at https://wiki.step-project.com/Pack:Weather_and_Lighting and in there it says "Either install this in it's own section after Conflicting Graphics or place them in Landscape and Environment".

So now my plan is follow the STEP extended guide, and install the weather pack stuff after conflicting graphics, just wondering whether I should do the same with Falskaar, and if so where to put it? I would guess it would be after the official bethesda DLC's? Not sure though, and don't wanna break something so figured I should check here first.

Also, should I still use the STEP extended patch? I'll have all the STEP extended mods + Beth DLC's, but also some extra ones as well, and some of the installs of STEP mods will be different from the guide due to selecting compatibilty options relating to CoT and Falskaar etc.

The more I try to follow STEP guides the more confused I get.

That's why all my friends do not use it.

I just finished STEP:CORE, (took a bit because there are issues and bugs in there that I should have written down) and now trying to move on "STEP: EXTENDED" but I cannot find a proper guide for that..the guide that pulls up for me looks like an old, unfinished one..that only has like 5% of the mods already installed with CORE.

Where's the actualy EXTENDED guide?  On the page I find this:

https://wiki.step-project.com/Pack:STEP:Extended

And that can't be right.

I need to post this in my own thread, sorry didn't mean to hijack yours.  Ignore me.

Well Skyfalls and Skymills overwrites Falskaar, I assumed the OP was going to install the falskaar version of that mod as well.

So if I read correctly, it's as simple as placing Falskaar and Wyrmstooth up the list (near the DLC) and ensure subsequent mods have respective patches/versions enabled for the 3rd party 'expansions'.

This is the first mention of these add-ons I've found here (though haven't looked indepth yet), and wondering if there is a stability/gameplay reason why given their high community endorsements, i.e. just curious.  How about 'Moonpath'?  As a cat lover, always wanted to travel with the Kajiits...

As mentioned, there likely isn't a lot that overwrites these expansions, but there are many mods to comb through to make sure.  If anyone knows, suspects, or has a list on hand, please provide to assist.

The intent of the STEP Guide is to stay as close to the vanilla game as possible to provide a solid foundation for additional packs that can be added on top of STEP Core or STEP Extended. This means mods like Wyrmstooth and Falskaar are not appropriate for STEP Core or STEP Extended, but are appropriate for an additional pack that adds new cities and towns on top of STEP.

I swear I've answered this exact question before. It really shouldn't matter, as there are no conflicting files.

Aren't there?  Do not some mods on the list, when being installed, ask if you have Falskaar, and or, Wyrmstooth installed?

Usually that's done in a mod installer to determine if the mod in question needs to install patch files to extend that mods capabilities to Falskaar or Wyrmstooth.

That's one good reason to add Falskaar and Wyrmstooth early so following mods will see their presence.

I would personally install them early to ensure you don't miss any optionals/patches for the new worlds.

The answer is right there on the Guide starting with Nomenclature and ending with the Mod Tables Legend:

The following nomenclature is used throughout this guide and should be understood before proceeding.

Core mods: Mods that are Core to the STEP Guide collectively known as STEP:Core. STEP:Core is an installation of ONLY Core mods listed in the mod tables following.
Extended mods: Mods that are not Core mods in the STEP Guide collectively known as STEP:Extended. STEP:Extended is an installation of ALL mods listed in the mod tables following.

Okay, now we know what a STEP:Core and STEP:Extended installation is. So how do I know which mods are Core and which are Extended from the mod tables? Answer:

Core Mod - Core mods are indicated by the presence of a green-ish vertical bar in the row at the immediate left-hand column of the table.

So Core mods are all the mods with a green bar to the left of the table. That means all the mods missing a green bar to the left are Extended mods.

Install all the mods in the order they're listed in the tables for a complete STEP:Extended installation. (This is also mentioned multiple times in the Guide.)

I did that, and so far SkyFalls and SkyMills asked about both, and I think 2 or 3 others asked about Falskaar.

TechAngel, thanks for clearing that up.  I knew about the green bars meaning Core mods, but I had forgotten that adding the others was considered Extended.  So when I kept seeing "installing the Extended Patch," I kept wondering where this "Patch" was located.  I think the term "patch" was what threw me off.  Maybe adding a yellow vertical bar and legend that shows up before each section, or just at the top of all those mods, telling which is which would clear it up.  I think the problem is that there is so much info thrown at you in a short period of time, it is easy to forget something that simple.

I would personally install them [Falskaar and Wyrmstooth, and...?] early to ensure you don't miss any optionals/patches for the new worlds.

If this is the case, then wouldn't it be helpful for the STEP install guide to at least briefly mention these mods as a possibility? (unless I missed something).  So not as part of the core, I understand that, but as least consider pointing it out for the new people.

There are always new players coming to STEP who don't know about the 3rd party environs, and/or don't know that this or that mod in the STEP will offer patches for the environs.  Sure, these environs and STEP mods can always be installed/reinstalled, but there are so many mods to comb through after the fact.
