Hiding unticked mods on the left pane

Question

Posted

Hello,

Been keeping an eye on Mod Organizer since its launch but only started using it recently since the early versions did not properly support Nexus Premium download servers / NMM links. That being said I am loving MO - there was a tool with similar purpose for Oblivion called mTES, but seems like MO is an entirely different animal of a much larger caliber. Absolutely recommended for any mod use.

However I recently came across a minor issue and cannot seem to find an answer on the wiki or by Googling.

I have been holding off my interest in Requiem and SkyRe (Skyrim Redone) since both of them are giant overhauls that has a high potential for conflicts, and also incompatible with quite a bit of mods. Thanks to MO now I can create a profile for each separately and tailor my current mods to work with either or; this, however, makes my mod list on the left pane quite untidy and clogged with checked and unchecked boxes in turns.

For example:

[v] ASIS

[  ] ASIS - Requiem

[v] Enhanced Character Edit

[  ] Enhanced Character Edit - Requiem

[  ] Enhanced Character Edit - SkyRe

[v] Immersive Armors

[  ] Immersive Armors - SkyRe

Since I can set multiple categories for each files, I have created new categories named Requiem and SkyRe to tick them on files for each respectively. Using the filter function I can tick the boxes rather conveniently. However whenever I am trying to add a new armor / weapon, or introduce a new element to combat or magic, I have to go through the list of 300+ mods to find which order I would arrange the files as. Sure, I could move all the Requiem or SkyRe files to the top and leave the unused ones at bottom in each profile to do so, but I prefer arranging it in that manner so that I can immediately sort out which file overrides which, and that makes it easier to sort the order when I have to place something before / after across all profiles.

This would be easily solved if I could make certain mods only show up with a specified profile; I'd imagine using the custom category to do so would be ideal. If there is such function that I simply missed, please let me know. If not, then I would like to appeal this as a function available for the next update of MO.

Can't you simply type "SkyRe" or "Requiem" into the namefilter?

Already mentioned it in the OP.

Again, rearranging the mods when certain things need to be overridden by the other (e.g. compatibility patches) for all three setup by filtering can be tedious. As mentioned in the OP I prefer leaving identical mods with different corresponding versions at the same place of list so that I can easily organize and rearrange them. It just gets too long and sometimes I am uncertain if I checked a mod after switching from one to other so hiding the ones that are not associated with that profile, for example, would be a great feature.

I've been hoping for something like this for a while. As far as I know, there isn't such an option.

What I ended up doing is having two installations of mod organizer. Mod organizer - skyre and mod organizer - requiem. Both have step core and extended installed as a base, then the respective overhauls.

There is nothing stopping you from using two or more instances of MO for different play styles. Before my system crashed I had a skyre, requiem, vanilla, STEP, SR revisited and a couple of testing installs.

The downside is you use more disk space if you replicate your mods across the installs.

Have you had any issues with downloading NXM links with so many installs? I've been having to resort to manually downloading and installing via the add archive function. When I use the NMM link, it always defaults to my Mod Organizer - Requiem install, even though I have Mod Organizer - SkyRe open.

I've tried going into settings and clicking the "Associate with 'Download with Manager' links" button.

Well, that is a shame. Running two instances of MO in my case would defeat the purpose since the main reason I organize and maintain my list in that manner is because whenever I try to introduce a new mod into my gameplay, I want to see how it affects each instance of Vanilla (Deadly Dragon + ASIS), Requiem and SkyRe without meddling too much. Disk space isn't really a concern since I did not install Skyrim on my SSD, but ticking multiple mods and not having to worry about discrepancies or files overriding one other is the main reason I use MO and thus keeping two instances would be losing its merit.

Back to using filtering it is then. Although I do feel like it would be a definitely nice function to introduce to the next version of MO - perhaps I will make a formal suggestion.

Hit the little filter button on the bottom left under the mods pane and click <Checked>. Damn, I should have said something a while ago, sorry XiNARO.

This goes some way towards dealing with it, and makes life manageable at least.  But I do agree with the OP, the ability to remove mods from profiles completely would be extremely helpful and help keep things much neater.

Keeping the Checked filter on works quite a lot of the time.  The problem comes when you have some mods that you consider part of your current profile, but for whatever reason you have unchecked for now.  Maybe you downloaded a new mod that you plan to try out in a day or two, when you can be bothered to go through the install procedure.  Or maybe you suspect a recently installed mod is causing problems, so you uncheck it to do some tests, but hope to re-enable it later.

I often find that I need to turn off the Checked filter, to review my unchecked mods.  When I do that, the problem returns - huge amounts of clutter to sort through.

Similarly, I sometimes want to download mods speculatively.  I use SkyRe, but have never tried Requiem.  Sometime I might decide to give Requiem a quick go, so I'll download a bunch of mods for it.  It might happen that I only play with Requiem for a short while, and stop using it.  But I don't then want to delete all those new mods, because maybe I'll come back to them later.

The more that sort of stuff happens, the more messy the mod list gets, and while the Checked filter helps a lot of the time, it's not the final solution.

I have had exactly the same thought, for the reasons you mention & I elaborate on above.

I have been working on a feature proposal for Tannin, which would entail (in brief):

[*]A new, "Master mod" view; a list of all mods installed on the system.  No checkboxes, no priority.  Just a list of all available mods.

[*]Right-click menu on "Master mod" view, "Add to profile.." allowing you to add selected mods to selected other profile

[*]Right-click menu on Profile mod view, "Remove from this profile", allowing you to completely hide a mod from the current profile

[*]Configuration option(s):  "Newly installed mods are installed to...   (o) All profiles   () Current profile only";  so by default, when you install a mod it goes to all profiles (as now), but user can easily change it to just current profile.

This is mostly - or entirely - a UI change; the underlying data is already arranged appropriately.  Each profile has a modlist.txt which shows which mods are installed, and the order of those mods.  In fact right now the user could go and remove some mods from some profiles by editing the Modlist.txt.  The problem is that MO would automatically add them back in on load and refresh.

So I think the change could be acheived fairly easily - no major internal changes, it's just a different UI presentation.

I then wanted to propose a second, followup idea, which would make multi-profile even more awesome:  per-profile mod and file management.    This would allow the user to hide files within a mod only within a single profile.  Ideally, it would even allow the user to install the same mod multiple times, using different installer options, and have the different versions go to different profiles.    Significantly, it would also allow different sets of Optional ESPs.  So for example, you install mod NeedsModX.  This comes with a SkyRe patch and Requiem patch, and you choose to install both.  Then in your SkyRe profile, you mark the RequiemPatch.esp as 'Optional', meaning it's hidden from the Plugin view and the Data view, and will not be seen by any external tools.  Vice versa in the Requiem profile.

This second change is likely quite a bit more work, and is definitely not only a UI change. But it would be the complete solution, make multi-profile management, with varying mods, mod order, per-file mod conflict resolution, and patch choice selection, all variable between different profiles. It would all be so much cleaner to manage. Avoiding for example - with regard to multiple patches, each applying only to one profile - the Plugin Load Order clutter you would get today if you installed both SkyRe and Requiem patches at once, but only had some enabled in some profiles and some in others.  Also would generally avoid the need to install the same NeedsModX twice or more, once with SkyRe options, once with Requiem options, and thus end up with two mods: "NeedsModX - Requiem version" and "NeedsModX - SkyRe version", both of which have to be updated independently when a new release comes out.

I haven't had a chance to raise these ideas formally to Tannin, yet.  At the moment I'm working on a feature request regarding in-BSA per-file conflict resolution, and a much improved Conflicts & Filetree view for mods. I wanted to finish and raise that first before doing the per-profile suggestion.

So if you want to go ahead and formally raise the central "different mods visible in different profiles" idea, I can add my further thoughts later.  Or otherwise I'll get my suggestion up in the next few days, and you can add your thoughts to it once it's there.

In case you're not familiar with it, the place to raise feature suggestions is the Issue Tracker, here:  https://issue.tannin.eu/tbg/modorganizer

I'm pretty sure this doesn't answer the OP's original problem. But I just thought I'd toss this out there since the topic is about sorting and finding mods and grouping types of mods together

I like to create empty 'mods' within MO to separate certain sections of the mod list. Using STEP as an example a section of my mod list on the left side of MO would look like this:

[ ]-----Clutter & Miscellaneous-----

[ ] The 418th Step

[ ] Better Bones

[v] Better Shadowmarks

[ ] Dark Brotherhood Tenets Restored

[v] Designs of the Nords

[v] Detailed Rugs

...

...

[v] Sweet Mother

[ ]-----Sound-----

[v] Better Animal Footsteps

[v] Better Horse Pain Sounds

...

...

[v] Ultra Realistic Crossbow Shoot Sounds

[ ]-----Gameplay-----

[v] Auto Unequip Ammo

...

...

The -----XXXXXXX----- folders are all just empty folders that I created inside the .../Mod Organizer/mods folder

By doing this, whenever I have a new mod that I want to install (like Immersive Armors) I'll just install the mod, then drag it up to the relevant section (like -----Armors-----)

This breaking up into sections helps my brain know where to put certain types of mods so when scrolling through hundreds of mods I can just look for sections. The great thing is that all of the STEP and Pack guides have these section names already and are broken up this way. I do this same process when installing SR:LE and Fear and Loathing (for New Vegas). It's not always perfect and sometimes MO yells at me and tells me that there is a potential load order issue. But for the most part things work great this way.

I have 565 mods. I'm just happy I'm able to manage that many. Just imagine that many in Nexus Mod Manager...

Creating custom "mod list separators" goes a long way toward keeping things organized. But then, so does categories.
