The Skyrim Distance Overhaul (by Grieche)

I get the same giant ball of fire and FPS drop being reported by oqhansoloqo.

I neither experience such an effect nor a significant performance drop - though I have only checked in my own temporary mod list and a slightly modified SRLE. Well, I wanted to add a STEP 2.2.9 profile anyway.

I don't know about you guys, but for me, I ran a comparison of my FPS with SDO and without it. It drops my FPS from about 60 to about 30. That's pretty bad. It makes a lot of the distant details pretty, but kills the gameplay. And some people said they were getting only 2-4 FPS drop? Here's my computer: Intel I7 950 (3.07GHz), 8 GB RAM, 64-bit Win 7, NVIDIA GeForce GTX 770 4GB VRAM (EVGA FTW), 1080p resolution. My setup is pretty good...

Your CPU could be the cause. See here: https://forum.step-project.com/topic/4770-nvidia-33750-beta-drivers/?p=77188

My specs are just below yours (see my signature) so it's either your hardware (CPU?) or some other factor you have in your install (like greater texture resolution than STEP Baselines). At the lowest point (in the swamps) my FPS only fell to 39 for a split second and averaged 48 FPS; whereas, without it I was running 50FPS in the swamps with the lowest point being 40FPS...so only a 2FPS drop.

Here is the effect that some are experiencing with Campfires:

TechAngel85 - Thanks for the link.  That really ticks me off that I was swindled into buying a CPU that wasn't designed for a desktop computer (that could be a gaming rig).  Skyrim Performance Monitor tells me that only something like 30-40% of the CPU is being used though all the time.  Is there a way to unlock the CPU so that it allocates more of itself to the game?

I definitely do use higher textures than baseline - I always pick the 2K texture options (but not 4K).  I have optimized all mods listed in the DDSOpt guide though to maximize efficiency at 2K.

My Giant Campfires looked worse than that with the optional .esp file.  Mine looked like big completely rounded bright glowing balls above the fire.

That's just your Wicker Man mod, TechAngel85. ::P:  Maybe we could find out more if some of you with the problem were willing to add their mod lists and ENB (if in use).

oqhansoloqo, have you already tried Grieche's settings for lower end machines?

Optional .ini Tweak:
- The lines fBlockLevel1Distance and fBlockLevel0Distance effect how far the new LOD-Objects will be visible (SkyrimPrefs.ini -> [TerrainManager]).
I recommend:
- fBlockLevel1Distance=40000 and fBlockLevel0Distance=20000 for slow machines (or lower).
- fBlockLevel1Distance=70000 and fBlockLevel0Distance=35000 for normal/fast machines.
- for high-end machines try fBlockLevel1Distance=120000 and fBlockLevel0Distance=60000 or higher (this will drop your FPS dramatically - 70000 and 35000 is already good enough in my opinion).

thommaal - excellent suggestion to drop the shadow res.  that helps a ton with FPS in general.

So I re-activated the mod and was getting excellent FPS ~55-60 in most areas.  So I say to myself, "well, I was getting really bad FPS up between Helgen and Riverwood before.  Before I write off the mod as running really nicely now, let me just go back there and check it again."  So I traveled up near the 3 stones and looked out in the direction of the falls.  FPS went from 60 to 30 and even dipping into the low 20s.  What?!  So I moved my view around a bit and realized that the FPS drop SEVERELY any time I have Bleakfalls Barrow in my sight, even if I walk up near Helgen.  MAJOR hit to FPS.  Beyond STEP mods I do have a mod called No Snow Under the Roof installed that adds snow piles around Bleakfalls Barrow - a mod that I think a lot of STEP modders use.  I don't know if this was the cause of it or not, but I suggest you guys travel over there in the game and check it out.

EDIT: definitely not "No Snow Under the Roof", and I do not believe that it is any other non-STEP mod I have installed that is causing this.

I'm removing this mod for now from my personal mod list until some of these things can be resolved - such as the Bleakfalls Barrow issue (or any other similar issue not yet realized - like the atomic bomb giant fire thing was also such an issue).

I tested this and there is a drop. My lowest point was 35FPS with Bleakfalls in view...60 when it was not. I don't think there is a way around this one. The campfires we can just not use that ESP for now. This one is in one of the main files I think. Minor if it's the only place. Will most definitely be marking this as a performance heavy mod and those with systems that can't handle it. If it's too much of an issue with just Bleakfalls, then we might be able to find that mesh and disable it for the install instructions. That'll probably be an "after-release" change so more people can test.

There are a few other Nordic ruins similar to Bleak Falls Barrow in the game. Are those affected the same way - being in an area with one of those ruins in view?

Here are some links with pics to the Nordic ruins in the game - makes it easily find ruins that are similar in design:

Giant Campfire Blast Effect

TechAngel85, if you have Immersive Creatures installed, could you take a quick look at the Giant Camp at Guldun Rock [coc GuldunRockExterior02] to see if the blast effect is visible there as well.

ADDED

oqhansoloqo, I just realized, you have Immersive Creatures - care to take a quick look?

Now my BOSS load order is not perfect for this test, due to me wanting to quickly just enable the SDO mod to check for you, but I assume that it would show the same either way.

So anyway, I checked on that other Giant Campfire and it looked OK.  To reconfirm that I installed everything OK or at least enough to get the strange issue as before, I went back to the fire near Whiterun and it still looks messed up.  So perhaps it's just that one then.  I don't know.
