REQUEST: S.T.E.P 2.2.8 and MO -- USKP and correct ordering of esp's

Question

Posted

Finally returned to Skyrim after more then a year and installed the complete S.T.E.P 2.2.8 guide. I have all DLC's installed (requirement for STEP 2.2.8). Overwrite directory purged but now the red rectangle shows 'there are potential problems with your setup'.

Afaik the new 2.x Unofficial Patches series like Unofficial Skyrim Patch which uses false esm's made it possible that some scripts did not work any longer and the esp order for mods had to change. Tannin has tried to automatically correct this, but this is not always possible. Instead he now shows a list of files which have to be reordered. I'm not sure if that list is 100% correct or not. I TOTALLY lack the knowledge to determine that.

As MO is now the preferred mod manager for STEP it would be great if the guide would contain instructions about what the correct order of the esp's is and the MO user has no red warning rectangle. This can be accomplished with I think BUM (Boss User Manager) of BOSS user rules. I haven't found info about this in the STEP guide.

Question: Can somebody help me (and by doing that help the STEP users) with the correct order and or show me where to get the info needed to determine this myself. I have in the two spoiler tags beneath included the mods which are in the STEP guide and the ones I have installed myself.
The conflict resolution order for some mods with scripts differs from the corresponding esp. This can lead to subtle, hard to locate bugs. You should re-order the affected mods. The following changes should fix the issue:

Move Brawl Bugs Patch - Compatibility Edition MO after Unofficial Dragonborn Patch

Move Ars Metallica - Smithing after Brawl Bugs Patch - Compatibility Edition MO

Move When Vampires Attack after Ars Metallica - Smithing

Move Even Better Quest Objectives after When Vampires Attack

Move The Choice is Yours after Enhanced Blood Textures

Move The Choice is Yours - Dawnguard after The Choice is Yours

Move Thieves Guild Requirements after The Choice is Yours - Dawnguard

Move Follower Trap Safety -- Brawl Bug Plugin after Thieves Guild Requirements

Move Non-Essential Children -- Hearthfire edition after Follower Trap Safety -- Brawl Bug Plugin
Move Civil War Overhaul after Even Better Quest Objectives

Okay, with the current STEP order, you should not get that problem at all. Is your priority order in the left pane EXACTLY the same as in the STEP guide? If you're using the beta version of Thieves Guild Requirements, you must also delete the Scripts/ski_playerloadgamealias.pex file for everything to be okay.

As for mods not in STEP, I cannot help you. Most of the time that warning can be safely ignored.

As for Unofficial Patch ordering, it should be like on the Unofficial Patch mod page. Note that the Mod Organizer sort button doesn't sort the Unofficial Patch version 2 files in the correct order yet, so run BOSS through MO instead.

On the Unofficial Patch v2 note...

I'm thinking we need to relook at unpacking the Unofficial Patch BSAs. It is possible that unpacking them might be extremely unwise considering that the Unofficial Patch team are loading their BSAs through the esps, and will consider us to be subverting the ordering by making them loose files, when they might intend some of the vanilla files in the DLC BSAs to be overwriting the Unofficial Patch files in BSAs to maintain compatibility (example, Unofficial Skyrim Patch if loaded loose without Unofficial Dragonborn Patch will cause dragon souls to bug out if you have Dragonborn).

Thanks for the reply. I will double check the install order again.

Could 1 or 2 mods not in the correct install order cause such a large list of 'warnings'?

I'm using Thieves Guild Requirements version 1.5.

I forgot to mention that I DID unpack ALL Unofficial patches related bsa files. I can reinstall them as BSA to see if this makes a difference.

EDIT: I am running the external BOSS because of known issues with the builtin on (SUM etc) as mentioned in a thread here about the new MO 1.1 beta.

Thanks for correcting me, appreciated. Using MO since May 2012 and then sometimes I forget to state the obvious. The external BOSS is kickstarted by MO, just like my WB, Free commander, Tes5Edit etc.

I have them packed in BSAs. In fact I have all major mods repacked to save space too. No problems whatsoever with MO 1.1+. You must remember to tick them manually in the archives tab in MO though.

If you have the esp clicked then it doesn't matter if you click them in the BSA tab. That tab is for BSAs that are just dummy plugins that only we've to load the BSA. MO can load those BSAs without the plugin of you check in the BSA tab so it saves a plugin slot.

@DY, we should encourage users to run BOSS and not use the MO version yet. Maybe this needs to be on the BOSS part of the guide.

We already instruct users to run BOSS and not use the sort button: https://wiki.step-project.com/STEP:2.2.8#3.A.1._Sort_Plugins_Using_BOSS

If you only have mods from the STEP Guide, and you have them all installed exactly as on the STEP Guide, and you have them all sorted by BOSS, there shall be no warning about problematic load order in Mod Organizer. It doesn't matter whether or not you have BSAs extracted or not.

First - Arthmoor is pretty adamant about not unpacking bsa files Unofficials and others. I think STEP and MO should listen - he knows a lot about that kinda stuff :)

What I did was to put the Unofficials in the skyrim/data folder so they could be ordered correctly in MO archive tab - When put into MO virtual directory you can't order the bsa's correctly and thus the idea of unpacking came in. Putting Unofficials into data removes the need.

Here is a pic of my Archive tab in MO...

It has been working fine for me. Notice the Unofficial High Res Patch is in MO not data folder as the esp is not a false esm and it follows install order too.

The reason you can't order them correctly is because with the unofficials in MO and not data, they would only be able to order them after all files in the data folder, like the Unofficial High res patch.

You are wrong. All you have to do to is NOT check the Unofficial Patch BSAs AND official DLCs in Mod Organizer's Archives tab and you have the exact same effect. It is a misconception that you need to check every BSA in the Archives tab in order for them to load. I swear, nobody reads the little note at the bottom of the Archives tab!

You are NOT an idiot. Indeed you thought it through farther than most people do, and I commend you for thinking outside of the box, literally. If you had to check every BSA for it to load, you would be absolutely correct. I think most people are confused about BSAs, and that is why we have this discussion. BSAs are mentioned in the Mod Organizer guide here: https://wiki.step-project.com/Guide:Mod_Organizer#Archives

I have double checked everything and rechecked it again in MO. Its very easy to forget something but I think I have the installation order now in the exact same  as in STEP 2.2.8. Still I'm getting the 'there are potential problems with your setup' warning in MO.

What I have done (I had gremlins in my MO). Installed a new MO 1.1.1, choose the installer version. As I had cleaned my profiles directory and I had not changed the categories I simply moved the profiles and mods directory to this new MO 1.1.1. As I had other mods installed I copied (using MO) my 'STEP 2.2.8' profile to a 'ONLY STEP 2.2.8 mods enables' profile. Deselected mods so that ONLY STEP 2.2.8 mods are enabled. I did run BASH for a bashed patch and ran BOSS kickstarted by MO. After that I can see that in the profiles directory files are updated. Note I have tried to disable the mods for which MO shows ''has empty esp can be disabled" including brawl bug to see if it makes a difference. It does NOT.

I have created a zip file with the mentioned profile directory and the userlist.txt and generated BOSS.html of BOSS and the warning given by MO in it. You can download it here from my dropbox account.
The conflict resolution order for some mods with scripts differs from the corresponding esp. This can lead to subtle, hard to locate bugs. You should re-order the affected mods. The following changes should fix the issue:

Move Brawl Bugs Patch - Compatibility Edition MO after Unofficial Dragonborn Patch - loose file version

Move Ars Metallica - Smithing after Brawl Bugs Patch - Compatibility Edition MO

Move When Vampires Attack after Ars Metallica - Smithing

Move Even Better Quest Objectives after When Vampires Attack

Move Enhanced Blood Textures after Even Better Quest Objectives

Move The Choice is Yours after Enhanced Blood Textures

Move The Choice is Yours - Dawnguard after The Choice is Yours

Move Thieves Guild Requirements after The Choice is Yours - Dawnguard

Move Follower Trap Safety -- Brawl Bug Plugin after Thieves Guild Requirements

Move Non-Essential Children -- Hearthfire edition after Follower Trap Safety -- Brawl Bug Plugin

DoubleYou stated that the STEP install order was created in such a way that no warning should be shown. I have no idea why MO on my system gives me the warning. Before I start to enable more mods for my personal taste like Skyre it would be good to start with a situation where everything is OK.

I would appreciate it very very much if someone could check out the zipfile and see if he/she can find out what I am doing wrong - or find out if something is fishy with (my) MO.

Should the brave soul willing to help me out need more info, please send me a PM. Currently 5+ days busy with installing all the mods of STEP. Still on lvl 1 ;-(

OK' date=' I think I see what's up. It's Brawl Bug Plugin, if I'm right. You should extract the BSA and delete the dummy ESP, and that probably should be it.[/quote']

The BSA already was disabled. The 'Brawl bug CE.esp' in the right window shows 'empty esp .....', even if the BSA was not there but I guess MO just looks at the BSA. Disabled it there but I could also delete it (or better move it to 'optional esp's for the mod). Anyway it DOES make a difference. Instead of 10 warnings I now have 7.

Move Brawl Bugs Patch - Compatibility Edition MO after Non-Essential Children -- Hearthfire edition

I'm going to disable the other "empty esp's" to see if it makes a difference. Thought I already did that but who knows...

Thanks for the help.

EDIT: Just noticed that you are right with delete the mod. After I moved it to optional (effectively the same as delete concerning the virtual filing sytem) the following warning disappeared:

Move Brawl Bugs Patch - Compatibility Edition MO after Non-Essential Children -- Hearthfire edition.

Gonna try deleting/optionalizing other esp's as well. Will report back....
