Got a really game breaking error after following S.T.E.P.

Question

Posted

I have followed S.T.E.P. CORE down to the T and have started a save I imported from xbox (vanilla Skyrim, so it is the same as starting a new, unmodded character). I ran up to one of those random groups of Imperials marching with a captive Stormcloak. Now, I have restarted from this exact point probably 30 times now due to technical issues I've had before I found S.T.E.P. So I have always gone to this same group of Imperials and captive probably 30 times in the passed couple of days.

Now this time, after doing all of this - the Imperial guard one shot me. I'm level 43. This has never happened. Something is Wrong. Does anyone know what it might be?

Looks like someone had his cherry popped...

I haven't looked at your load order, but I can almost guarantee you that it's normal. Even in vanilla skyrim, depending on certain little details, can an imperial aggro against you. Welcome to the modding world, things get a lot different here!

If it happens again if you set difficulty to easy then it might be a cause for some concern.... otherwise, just a freaky accident. Those imperials are in my experience pretty nasty in general.

It's not him aggroing that's the problem. I walked up to him and kill them myself. The problem was how much damage he did. That can't possibly be normal. It's completely unbalanced - and not in like a "wow this is harder and cool!" kind of way. A peon one shot me - a level 43 heavy armor wearer. He had a one handed sword that did 9 damage. It's clearly an error with the way one of the mods modified weapon values.

On a hunch I deactivated the Unofficial patches, and it stopped happening. As per recommended by the CORE guide, I had cleaned, using TES5EDIT, the unofficial patches. Do you think that may have been the problem? Should they not have been cleaned?

Since those guys are part of a preset encounter set to happen at random, you should be able to look up what the values of the characters are.

Either that or check how the stats for an imperial legion soldier looks after you hit lvl 40, but checking the leveled list for that type.

But again if that is the only guy doing that sort of thing, then I would just lower the difficulty to lowest for the battle... which reduce all dmg to 50% of the base... if that still one shots you then damn that is some decimal point going wrong somewhere.

Check your difficulty settings. I'm not sure why, but when I first did step my difficulty was getting set to Master. If this is happening, go change it in the ini editor in Mod Organizer. There's a difficulty setting value that would be from 0 to 5.

Thanks for that suggestion. Unfortunately it's set to 2 - like normal I believe. In Game is "Adept". Like, it's not the biggest deal in the world, but I severely doubt this is the only person in the whole game who's set to God Mode right now. It begs the question - is the Unofficial Patch really worth it? Because this is game breaking.

Is there a console command for that?

Hm. You might need to report the issue to whoever made the mod. I can see here.. https://www.iguanadons.net/Unofficial%20Skyrim%20Patch%20Version%20History.html

Under Actor Fixes "Guards will no longer have doubled up damage perks which cause them to deliver one shot death blows even to high level players."

Seems like that's having the opposite effect.

Indeed. Thank you for finding that, I'm gonna report it. I'm going to opt out of using this mod, even though a LOT of people recommend it.

You know I played a little further in and found that a LOT of enemies are doing more damage. I think the mod is supposed to scale the game to your level more, but a lot of it seems arbitrary and this, ofcourse, seems like a blatant mistake.

Anyways, thanks again man/woman.

actually, the unofficial skyrim patch isn't supposed to be affecting all npcs like that in regard to scaling. I think tomorrow I'll have a look at your load order after all; can't now, fixing to sleep. Something tells me you have a mod affecting something, maybe a mod conflict too.

So...you tes5edit cleaned the unofficial patches?

The patches created and designed specifically to FIX errors in the game. The ones that are created by a whole community of deity level mod makers that know exactly what they are doing. The same people that run the BOSS lists, that tell you what mods to clean and what mods NOT to clean.

You should not ever clean the unofficial patches, any ITM's that tes5edit finds are deliberate and need to be left in there. Seems to me that you've broken your save by cleaning those.

Also in my own experience and some advice from others on these forums. The only way to have a truly clean start to a game, is to START A NEW game. Importing a vanilla save and starting from scratch are 2 different things.

As you know exactly where the prisoner escort is going to be, might i suggest you start a new game from scratch, once your out of the helgen, save the game, close it and restart. Then load your save, find the escort. And see if it still happens.

The main issue with modding skyrim is the scrypts.......THEY ARE EVIL. They do what they want when they want and need to be treated like a woman "at that time".

Give it a try. You'll be surprised i think. It couldn't be any of your .esp's. From what i see you've only added lighting and weapons, nothing that tweaks behaviour.
