Request: Feedback for the virtual filing system article on the wiki.

Question

Posted

I have finished an article about the main feature of Mod Organizer in: The virtual filing system.

I have posted about this concept many times in the post before and go tired of retyping it every time. Now it resides on the wiki as a reference. You can find the article at the top of the Advanced tab of the MO wiki.

I found it VERY hard to write it and I really need your feedback to find out if the article is correct and more important understandable for every user. As in independent of your knowledge of modding. It should be understandable for users new to modding and to MO, seasoned modders and advanced modders as well.

I'm not looking for praises here. I'm looking for input about the article, things like is it factual correct or not, is it to long or short are there things missings, layout and structure. I value every feedback, input, remark, criticism.

REMEMBER: If you don't understand the article it does NOT mean you have not enough knowledge about Skyrim, MO or computers. It just means I did not explain things correctly. Which means it is MY fault and I have to correct it.

I'll have to evaluate it a bit more, but we probably can make this become focused on all games in general, rather than discussing it as Skyrim, and I see you have noted that. BTW, is it really 64 bits? Normally I hear people talk about 64-bit programs and 32-bit programs, or x86 and x64, not really "bits," but that is a minor thing.

I revised the first paragraph slightly.

Thanks for the comments. I agree with 64-bit programs instead of 64 bits programs. Thanks for the great edits in the wiki. I agree with all of them and the lot is now more consistent and the english has improved.  I've also send it to Tannin for a factual check. He agreed with the article. I have changed the 64-bit section with info I have received from Tannin.

I noticed an edit by Z wherein he has showed us it might be smart to make these articles go to subpages of the MO guide, linked to inside the Advanced section. This is a good idea, as the Advanced section is including quite a lot of content and difficult to navigate. Making subpages like this will help keep it organized.

Indeed the advanced tab is already way too long, it got even longer this evening. It has been discussed in the moderators forum. Uhuru also suggested subpages or even subpages inside subpages to keep things organized. Please send a PM so we can discuss this further.

The section on the virtualisation and the VF is fairly understandable; but my command of English IS fairly high as is my understanding of the terminology surrounding the programs used, so... Still, the terminology used can't really get much simpler than this; if they can figure out how to use MO, your readers should be able to figure out what you mean, and it is after the Advanced tab.

I'd also like to add my voice to suggestions for subpages to tidy up the Advanced tab: currently finding anything in there is difficult and messy.

Slightly off topic: Extending the section on running other games with MO, if possible would also be appreciated-- might need a subpage of its own I think. Personally, I've just gotten into playing and modding Oblivion, and was using Wrye Bash to do so at first, because I had trouble trying to get Oblivion working with MO due to lack of knowledge on the issues that cropped up. Even now I'm still working out kinks, and the process has been difficult, because the relevant scraps of info are scattered everywhere from here to the Nexus and out of date in some cases.

This would be a perfect opportunity to take some notes and maybe author a post about your ordeal. That is how we all started.

@Luinithil. Thanks for your contribution to this this thread, really appreciated.

In the last days the MO moderators and S.T.E.P. admins/staff have discussed what is the best way to clean the advanced section.

I have to admit that the 'Running MO with multiple games' section is pretty limited. Its likely to contain more information in the future. Personally I have only used MO with Fallout New Vegas (FONV) and Skyrim, not the other 2 games so I can't contribute to that section for those games. The wiki is being fleshed out at the moment but there is still a lot to do. Basically we try to convert the combined knowledge of the Nexus forum to the wiki. Therefore seriously reducing the scattering of info.

I agree with GSFan, please be so kind to create a post about your findings. It can then be added to the 'IMPORTANT: Technical Details' sub forum. The info will then later finds it way to the MO wiki. Everybody can and is encouraged to edit the MO wiki.

I gave up using MO the last time, because I needed my game up and working in a hurry; and for some reason Oblivion was failing to pick up on MO and its installed mods no matter what I did.

I'll be attempting to try and get Oblivion working properly with MO this time; Wrye Bash install worked, but was horrifically clunky in its conflict handling and generally everything, compared to what I'm used to now from MO. Since a bad mod's just made the whole thing blow up, forcing me to nuke my entire game, I'll be starting from a fresh install. A friend has already managed to update her previous MO-Oblivion setup to the current version of MO and have everything work, so I know it can be achieved. Will be taking notes on the process this time.
