Setting the mod priority you want

humbye

Question

Problem:

Let's say you have multiple mods, such as texture replacers, that replace the same texture (Iron Sword for the sake of the argument). You start up your game but find that the texture for Iron Sword is not the one you want. Typically, you would load the plugin (.esp file) for the texture mod you want - let's call it Mod A - after the plugin for the texture mod you don't - Mod B - and the problem should resolve itself.

What if Mod A or Mod B doesn't have a plugin that you could reorder? What if neither do? How do you tell Mod Organizer (MO) to prioritise Mod A over Mod B?

Solution:

The first thing you need to do is ensure which mod is taking priority over Mod A's textures.

1. Open Mod Organizer, and on the left hand pane, look for Mod A. You should see a lightning symbol with a plus and/or minus symbol, under a column titled "Flags". The plus symbol means that Mod A is taking priority over other mods, the minus symbol means that other mods are taking priority over Mod A. For our example, Mod A should have a minus symbol, and Mod B should have a plus symbol.

[Note: If you hover the mouse pointer over the lighting symbol, the UI will show a tooltip stating one of three things: "Overwrites files" for the plus symbol, "Overwritten files" for the minus symbol and, "Overwrites and Overwritten" for both. Mod Organizer doesn't actually overwrite any files, hence Mod Organizer needs to set priorities for the mods you use, and decides which files from which mods to use.]

2. Double left click on the symbol for Mod A, and you will see a window pup up.

3. Click on the conflicts tab. You will see two windows. The window on top ("The following conflicted files are provided by this mod") lists the files that MO uses from this mod over others. The window at the bottom ("The following conflicted files are provided by other mods") are the files that MO uses from other mods that replace the files from this one. In our example, you would see the texture file for Iron Sword from Mod B in the bottom window.

4. Close the window.

5. On the left hand pane, there should be a column titled "Priority". What you want is for Mod A to have a higher priority than Mod B. Note that the higher the number, the higher the priority.

6. Single left click on the number in the priority column for Mod A and you will be able to change the number. Set the number of Mod A higher than that of Mod B. So, for example, if Mod B had a number 10, then you need to set Mod A to 11 or higher. Don't worry if there's already a mod with a priority of 11, MO will automatically update the priority numbers accordingly.

7. Click the refresh button on the left pane (small button to the right of the Profile drop down menu), to refresh the list. The changes should then be apparent.

8. Repeat step 2 and 3, and check that the texture file for Mod B does not appear in the window below.

9. Do the same for Mod B, and check that the texture file from Mod A appears in the window below.

That's it, you should be ready to go. Start up your game and check that the correct texture file got loaded.

Hope this helps!

DoubleYou:

This information is technically all in the wiki on the priorities tab, but still is a valuable read for advanced info relating to hidden files and such. It does go off-topic later on. I may expand wiki priorities information to be more informative for specific examples like this in future.

Sorry for all obsessive Stat details, was cut and paste of a PC build site post, where they demand such details, I made to show what I'd decided to get built, while wating for it.

Not something I follow closely unless I'm actually buying PC or components at time.

I just changed colour of Names to make easier to pick out from stats.

When I try to explain something its hard for me to leave out details because I think that information is needed. But is it? Do users really care about that kind of stuff I wonder?

I have a humble suggestion to your conundrum. It will require some time, luck and a willing volunteer.

My suggestion is this: find a Mod Organizer user who is between Uhuru's Group 1 and 2. So not someone who just wants MO to work, but is also in the process of investigating how it works. That user does not yet have a full understanding of how MO works. I know this is a fine line, but bear with me.

Should you be lucky enough to find that user, then you would take a piece of MO functionality and ask them to explain it to you. Their level of knowledge would be good enough for them to give the correct answer, but nothing too in depth. You could then be assured that the answer is sufficient for Group 1 users, and then you could fill in the nitty gritty details for Groups 2 and 3 in a link (e.g. "Want to know more? Click here", type link).

I know this is a tall order, but I'm just thinking out loud.

@Aiyen:

Well, yes and no. I doesn't necessarily have to be a questionnaire. Separate pieces of functionality could be grouped thematically, and every once in a while, the volunteer would have to produce a series of bullet point explanations, for each piece. This information would be used as a guide for Group 1, whereas the MO specialists (Group 3) will produce the myriad details, built on top of those answers.

@humbye. I REALLY like your idea but there practical issues. Double you's MO sandbox which as of the 27th (very nice day btw) has been moved to the live MO wiki needs to be filled in first. After that, which will take at least multiple weeks if not more, we can look into it. I currently don't know how to setup the wiki in such a way that it would contain both the 'bullet point' answers and the 'myriad details' answers. Restructuring the wiki later on is not a problem as long as its says 'WIP, warning volatile'.

Having a wiki which is concise, to the point, understandable for the average users and still has all the nitty gritty details for the power users and which can be used as a reference would be great. I have to admit that.

@Wolverine:

I realized the practical issues involved as soon as I thought of this idea. I just wrote it as something that can be considered and maybe built upon.

As for combining both the bullet points and the in depth information, how about having one of those spoiler buttons that readers can expand or contract. Uhuru has one which contains his pc's specs (if I'm not mistaken). Obviously, it would have a different tag like "More Info" or "Details"; something like that.

That way, on one page you could have all the information: the bullet points for the average user, who can skip over the "More Info" sections, and expandable details sections for those who want it.

Again, just a thought.

I always appreciate ppl who try to make things better (for MO). I really don't know if there is such thing as 'spoiler tags' in the wiki. Doubleyou probably knows this. Even if its exists it will be a challenge to write the texts so that this 'fits'. Though certainly certainly something to consider (for the future). I would be glad if the wiki is nicely filled to start with. If you look at the original MO wiki and the one which is live now DoubleYou certainly has put a lot of work and love into this.

On my phone with very bad UI I hate using so forgive layout and brief reply

There are no spoiler tags on the wiki as far as I know. There should not be a need for spoilers on the wiki, however, if we format it correctly. Generally speaking, we would answer the question quickly in the first sentence, which should be short and to the point. After that, additional info can be added in subsequent sentences. Most people will never read the entire wiki; it's too large. My goal is for people to be able to find what they need to find in a glance and answer it quickly so they can go back to modding Skyrim. If they find the answer in the first sentence, they needn't read the second sentences. If they do need to read the subsequent sentences, I put big warning signs and notices up to catch their attention.

Hi,

Long time MO user, I'm facing a little problem to set up a specific load order I want in MO :

(right panel)

Posted Image

My goal is to put the priority of "Correctif.esp" (the French equivalent of the Unofficial Patch) just in front of the "Unofficial Skyrim Patch.esp" as it should be according to the creators team.

MO wont let me do that : apparently you can't drag'n and drop "regular plugins" in the middle of the "bold section" plugins : they are kept isolated.

Which, don't get me wrong should be fine most of the time.

But this lead me to wonder how MO does recognize and "tag" those priority plugins ? Is the information contained in the plugin itself ?

Originally I tought that only .esm master files would be isolated like that. But here we have also "Unofficial Skyrim Patch.esp".

Other loads orders software, such as the Skyrim Launcher seems to allow such ordering.

I'm aware that this is probably an automatic safe restricting functionality for ordering, but in this specific case, the "Correctif.esp" should be considered as "bold", and allow me to order it alongside the bold plugin segment.

I tried to manually edit the profile txt files, but with no effect.

Basically i'm looking for either "untagging" the USP files as not bold, or let Correctif.esp join this "priority group".

Apologies, my not-so-fluid English does not allow to make my posts  as concise as I would like them to be Smile.

Thanks.

EDIT : Sorry I did realize after posting that this wiki thread may well be not the optimal place to ask such questions, I have not yet the right to delete the post so I leave it there. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Hi there. Brief answer, as I'm typing from phone. Unofficial patches are 'false ESM' files as of version 2.0. That's why they're treated as ESMs by MO. Use Boss Userlist Manager program (Google it) to create custom override rules for the load order.
