I knew I was whistling thru the graveyard but hoped against hope...

After jumping into the Skyrim mod world in July I was finally to the point where I thought I could FINALLY ramp up and play the game.  Armed with NEO's last full SR, and Garfink's game overhauls I jumped in with 200+ mods.  Months of testing, pruning, learning I entered Helgen Keep and came out the other end.  After a couple of CTD's I got into Riverwood.  I have various saves: outside in Riverwood, inside Gertrudes house and inside the Trading post.  If I try to exit into Skyrim from Gertrudes house or the Trading Post I get the ILS.   If I try to load a saved game into outside Riverwood I get ILS.

I followed NEO SR methodically and left out a lot of mods.  Optimized what was listed to optimize.   On my own I swapped out SR's 2048 Vivid Landscapes for 1024's.  Other than that I stayed with Neo's recommendations.  I have not tweaked the ini's other than what shows on Neo's SR.

I'm using Unreal Cinema ENB .217

I'm at 200+ plugins which is probably asking for trouble.  But I left out anything over complicated and/or heavily scripted:  EBT, Wet and Cold, ASIS...

What's the best way to troubleshoot this issue?  Methodically remove texture mods one by one?  Remove a whole bunch and start a fresh game and see if Riverwood improves ?   I have skyrim performance monitor but haven't utilized it yet.

I'm sure there are as many reasons for ILS as there are stars in the sky.  I guess I'm just looking for a nudge in the right direction.  Thanks all.

Traveling from Solstheim to Skyrim almost always results in an ILS for me. If it does for you, just save your game before fast traveling and quit to the menu to dump all the memory and then reload and you should be able to travel. Other than that, just make sure you're using ENB Boost and make sure you have the enblocal.ini set up correctly. If you have an AMD card, try setting "disabledrivermemory" to true in Enblocal.

Yeah the good ol "quit to menu and reload" seems to be the safest bet other then reducing mod complexity.

Of course making sure you use a minimum amount of scripts to have the play experience you want is also a must.

In terms of freezing and ILS, I really think scripts are the problem, just as Aiyen said. Like I said before, if you use Deadly Spell Impacts, try removing it or not using the ESP since that solved a ton of my Freezes when shooting spells. In addition, try doing a clean save process (i.e. coc qasmoke, wait 31 in-game days, pcb, etc etc). Lastly, try the 'clearinvalidregistrations' command that is built into SKSE. That command reduced my save file size by half.

Should I be worried about save sizes or clean saves at this point ? I just started the game and once I exited Helgen Keep walking to Riverwood created two CTD. Reviewing inventory in the Trade Post created a CTD, then I got ILS whenever trying to get back outside from saved games. I'm guessing it may be too many texture mods but I don't exactly have a wealth of experience to go on. I tried to play the hero and carry 200+ mods I guess it's time to get real and cut bait...

I've been using my save file since 2011 when Skyrim came out. I currently don't have any save corruption (that I can tell at least.) I've also only been downloading STEP mods since the beginning and never really download mods that add in new areas, enemies, quests, etc so less chance of something messing up when I remove them.

If you're that worried about it go to you My Documents/My Games/Skyrim/Saves folder and let at how large the save files are if they're over say... 10MB I might decide to ask around the forums to see if it were an issue.

Like I said before, the 'ClearInvalidRegistrations' feature of SKSE can reduce save file bloat. My save file was like 30 mb or something (150+ hours) and I reduced it to 15 mb and got rid of some stuttering. Works fine now.

For FWIW I unchecked the bottom 3 .esp :

S.D.O Full-Lod - Giant Campfires Beta

S.D.O Full-Lod - Whiterun Creeks Beta

S.D.O Full-Lod - Morthal Swamp Trees Complete

Unchecked the below mod:

High Quality LODs (3 mods)

Author: Ethatron

Version: 2.1 (Meshes Hi-Res + Normals Original)

Optionals(In Archive):

Normals Original:

03 - High 256x256

AND the moon size adjust mod

My ILS issue disappeared and no CTD's at all last night.

What are the LOD files specifically? and could they have had such an impact with my ILS issue ?

High quality LODs seems to cause all sorts of loading issues for some reason. In general ILS can be removed if you reduce the amount of stuff that needs to load enough... Starting with LOD´s.
