rootsrat Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 I know we should not recommend our own mods... but I will anyway, as I think this is somewhat of a fix that should be in the game from the beginning. https://skyrim.nexusmods.com/mods/40678/? Did you ever wonder why crossbows and certain bolts can only be crafted at Gunmar's forge, even though it's not any special kind of forge? And why vendors never have any steel crossbows and steel bolts for sale, despite always being stocked on bows and arrows? Steel bolts and crossbows should be pretty common weapon in Skyrim in my oppinion and the availability should be quite similar to bows and arrows. Also, once you acquire knowledge of how to forge Dwarven crossbows and bolts and explosive bolts, you should be able to craft them at any forge, if you have the relevant perk. And that's what this mod does. And so: * Steel crossbow - No need for schematics - Can be crafted at any forge - Can be purchased at any blacksmith or fletcher shop * Enhanced steel crossbow - Need to find schematics first - Can be crafted at any forge - Cannot be purchased * Steel bolts - No need for schematics - Can be crafted at any forge - Can be purchased at any blacksmith or fletcher shop * Dwarven crossbow - Need to find schematics first - Can be crafted at any forge - Cannot be purchased * Enhanced dwarven crossbow - Need to find schematics first - Can be crafted at any forge - Cannot be purchased * Dwarven bolts - Need to find schematics first - Can be crafted at any forge - Cannot be purchased * Explosive bolts - Need to find schematics first - Can be crafted at any forge - Cannot be purchased Only Vanilla and Dawnguard are covered. Hearthfire and Dragonborn will be added in due course. Patches for Ars Metallica and Skyrim Redone are available.
WilliamImm Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 Great. I'd probably put them in the leveled lists as well. Makes no sense why they aren't as common as bows. Sent from my LG-E970 using Tapatalk 2
rootsrat Posted August 19, 2013 Author Posted August 19, 2013 Yeah, that is my plan for improvement. I need to read about how lists work though, as the crossbows and bolts are not in the generic ones, so they would need to be added as single items.
Aiyen Posted August 19, 2013 Posted August 19, 2013 The shamelessness! Oh well your lucky its a great mod ! :P
torminater Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 Well as for vanilla skyrim "lore" the dawnguard seems to have recovered crossbows on their own and have improved them. They are specifically vampire hunting weapons. So I'ld vouch for a version that makes them craftable everywhere after getting tge perks and doing the adjacent quests, but only buyable at fort dawnguard.

I will make a lore purist version tonight then, it's a few minutes job. Thanks for the suggestion! For my own playthrough I use some crossbow mods that make the weapon more common across Skyrim, hence I made this first version.
kryptopyr Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 This looks great. I really like the idea of making steel crossbows available in the world, and only being able to craft them at one forge never did make any sense. It's been a while since I played Dawnguard, but I don't remember them specifically talking about recovering crossbows (other than the schematics for the advanced versions). Is that somewhere in the dialogue or is it indirectly lore due to how crossbows are associated only with the Dawnguard in the game? Either way, I think I'll be playing with the non-purist version in this case.

Either way, I think I'll be playing with the non-purist version in this case. Well I was searching the internet today, but I did not find anything related. I myself did not play the DG questline. When I tested this mod yesterday the NPC that gives you Ancient Knowledge radiant quests to retrieve schematics for enhanced & dwarven crossbows and explosive bolts does mention indeed that they are forgotten and lost - that's why I did not include them in for crafting and and purchase. Only the steel ones. There is an NPC called Durak and here's what TES Wiki says about him: He is later seen outside Fort Dawnguard practicing with his crossbow. When asked about the weapon he mentions it is common for people not to be familiar with it, as it is a Dawnguard specialty; however, he will give the Dragonborn a standard crossbow and some steel bolts to try out. That would indeed indicate that crossbows are not THAT popular in Skyrim... I am going to check it out tonight to see what he exactly says in the dialogue. I am a bit of a lore purist, and I would like my mod to be as close to it as possible - however I don't mind going for some compromise when my mod set up and character playthrough specifics require that :)
Aiyen Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 Yeah there is purist... and then there is "It does not make any sense". This would also qualify as a "Lore Fix" Since it just does not make any sense that simple crossbows would not be wide spread in a world like tamriel.
Omolong Posted August 20, 2013 Posted August 20, 2013 I don't know how possible this is, but you could have it where you can buy them (and maybe find them on enemies/in chests and so on), but they're just rare. I doubt that some generic Dawnguard members wouldn't have been killed by bandits/animals/giants and so on, which sort of fits with the lore, I guess?

Yeah, I thought of that too, but I am not very experienced. In fact, until now I only produced some custom patches for myself and this is my first mod ever :) There is a lot to learn and just as much to improve! I have very limited time to spend on modding unfortunately, as I'm involved in quite a few other projects that take priority over Skyrim :)

Nor surprised. Kind of a Dawnguard specialty. Nothing better for putting down vampires" - then he gives you a crossbow. And this is the only line that indicates that crossbows are somewhat a rare weapon in Skyrim. If you never ask him about that, you are given a crossbow by Isran, and he only says: "Here, you should take a crossbow. Good for taking out those fiends before they get close." That's all. I will upload the lore purist version, although I think it's not really required. It also needs separate patches for SkyRe, which makes it a bit of a pain...
rootsrat Posted January 6, 2014 Author Posted January 6, 2014 Added Requiem patch. Also updated the mod to version 1.1. Changes:* Changed amounts of bolts that different vendors have for sale for lore consistency and immersion. * Removed Steel Crossbow and steel bolts from Hestla's chest. She's a vampire and it didn't make sense for her to sell these items.
rootsrat Posted February 9, 2014 Author Posted February 9, 2014 Version 1.2 is up, that brings the mod up to speed with the latest Unofficial Patches. Also updated all the patches to 1.2 This mod is now part of Krypto's Complete Crafting Overhaul Remade version, however CCOR does not add the crossbows and bolts to merchants' chests for sale, so I've uploaded a special CCOR version of the mod. Enjoy! :)
Aiyen Posted February 9, 2014 Posted February 9, 2014 Awwww... and here I did just that last night! Except the upload part... but well the tweaking of it so it fits. :)
