Can't even run Vanilla anymore...

Question

Posted

I installed SR for the first time. I don't have the DLCs but I was very careful to not install anything that required them. Got to the end of the guide, went to Run SKSE from Mod Organizer, and I got the following Windows error:

What's interesting is that I get this error even when I try to run Vanilla Skyrim / Skyrim or Vanilla Skyrim / SKSE.

Where do I even begin troubleshooting this?

Nope. Launcher throws same error.

When I run from MO, I get the Skyrim Uncapper pop-up, then nothing for a few seconds, then the Skyrim window (not adjusted yet for Borderless) then the error kicks in.

EDIT: It's ENB related. I disabled ENB and it runs -- seems to be working fine i.e. I went right into Live Another Life.

I installed the ENB per instructions. Version 0.178. Any thoughts on what might have gone wrong? Do I need to run the ENB Changer through MO? (I did not.)

EDIT #2: Tried ENB Version 0.168. Now the game loads but it crashes whenever I use the bed in Live Another Life. It crashes on the load screen.

Might be an ENB config that's too demanding on your system resources, particularly since I see it's a StackHash error. BTW, when dealing with crash messages, search for the crashing module's name, usually brings up something. Try disabling everything apart from color correction and shadows, maybe bloom if desired. Did Skyrim detect your graphics driver properly? On an Nvidia based system with Optimus it's possibly a good idea to use the Injector version instead of the wrapper since Optimus hates d3d9.dll and will cause Skyrim to try to run on your integrated graphics instead of the dedicated graphics card.

On AMD their booster software also messes with the d3d9.dll file. In general do not run with any monitor/OC programs while playing with an ENB since they most likely try to access the same resources.

The injector should solve most of these problems, but it might also give adverse performance issues. Might also increase performance in some cases. But as I understand it then most people find the better performance with the wrapper version.

Also ENB is sensitive to driver versions. Some just wont work at all.

Going to need more details in order to help out though! Like driver versions, OS etc.

Here are the relevant details I can think of.

Core i5-2500k stable at 4.5 GHz (yes, the whole rig has adequate cooling)

Radeon HD 7850 2GB VRAM -- overclocked around 1100 MHz and also a small boost to the memory clock

-- I did have MSI Afterburner running at the time, which could be the problem you mentioned

All drivers updated to latest release (non-Beta)

8GB RAM

Windows 7

Side question -- does my GPU overclock persist if Afterburner is not running in the background?

I installed SR as closely as possible with the following modifications:

Did not install any mod that requires DLC

Deactivated .esp for Werewolf Mastery because I was getting a message that it required Dawnguard.esm as a master (even though this is not explicitly stated on the Nexus page IIRC)

Deactivated .esp for Moonlight Tales because I got nervous about the Werewolf Mastery / Dawnguard situation

Installed 1024 textures whenever possible since I only have 2GB VRAM

Did not make any modifications to ENB since no recommendations were provided

With ENB turned off, it seems to run fine. The FPS is 45+ but of course that's with 0 Anisotropic filtering with the ENB deactivated + recommended .ini settings. The lighting is noticeably bad so I would need to make other tweaks if ENB is simply not an option for me for some reason.

Thanks guys for your help. Worst case I'll just go back to regular STEP but I really like the improvements in SR so I'd like to make it work.

If the OC is maintained only through the afterburner then no it will not persist. Since it is a software based OC that requires the program to continuously send information to the card. (Which is why it conflicts with ENB since it also requires the information from the game rendering in order to function.)

Since skyrim is a CPU heavy game and not a GPU heavy one any marginal gains in GPU clocks are basically not noticeable while playing. Even with ENB active then it is only marginal gains you would get from having it on.

Better to save GPU OC for games where it actually matters. And as a side benefit your card might survive for a bit longer. ;)

Try to disable all monitor and OC programs and try again. Also only use v.168 of ENB since the higher versions are still in beta and requires a so called helper mod in order to function properly.

If worst comes down to worst, there's also a recently released set of INI tweaks from Hexaae called "Vanilla at its best" that do improve lighting and color in game without needing an ENB-- just grab his gamma and RGB values; tweak shadows to your own satisfaction.

How can you accurately mod gammas and RGBs? All that depends on your monitor and lighting in the room. Seems like those type of tweaks are covered under "Make sure your monitor is properly calibrated."

OK I'll try the Afterburner Beta. Here's the recommendation from RealVision:

Using MSI Afterburner or similar program in combination with the wrapper version d3d9.dll could cause CTD at gamestart! Use the new MSI Afterburner 3.0 Beta 9 or above. They decoupled the on screen FPS server from the overclocking utility. It is the FPS server that crashes the wrapper version of the ENB DirectX 9 dll. So you can use the wrapper version of ENB & MSI Afterburner at the same time.

This is likely my problem, since I did have the FPS server running at the time.

I dont know if this helps, but when i was using programs that 'scan' the temperature/etc from your VGA, with afterburner, my skyrim crashed.

Tried with 3 different and all crashed, the only one that i can left open while using afterburn and skyrim is GPU-Z

I have no idea why...

I did recalibrate my monitor before testing the tweaks out. I'm going to post some links to screenshots over at the mods' thread to avoid off topic here. I do see some nice improvements to the colors in vanilla from those tweaks, but if you're using CoT it's not as apparent, so I'd say that tehse tweaks are a good place to start from. I do still need to figure out the right RGB balance etc. for CoT-- at the moment the settings as is make for slightly faded/washed out colours in the sky when CoT is installed and active.

Well, I did calibrate my monitor beforehand. I've tested the INI changes with CoT and without, and while acceptable, I think the INI changes look better without CoT, so I definitely have to mess around with the values on my own to find a better setting for CoT.

Note to mods: Not sure why I ended up with a double post here when I thought I was editing my previous post: apologies, please delete the previous post. Thanks.
