DoYouEvenModBro Posted May 28, 2013 Posted May 28, 2013 My question is for the 3 main texture packs (2k/Serious/SRO) Which has BETTER quality? Downloading the mod author's 1k version instead of the 2k? OR Using DDSOPT/OT to resize the textures from 2k down to 1k

There are quite a few textures that are contained in other packs, that might look better if you where to compare them side by side. Which was part of the reason for it getting removed from the nexus initially as I understood it, but lets leave that in the history books. In general for large packs, then if they exist in 1k versions from the author. Chance is that they have been made by a superior program with better algorithms then what ddsopt has.

I am going to swap out my resized OT 1k versions for the author's 1k versions. I wish I had the 1k version of SRO. I only had a 2k version saved so I guess I have no other choice than to resize it to 1k via OT, right? Also, I wonder if the mod author's 1k versions will have any effect on RAM usage compared to the resized 1k versions that I'm using now. I thought SRO was removed because the mod author got banned or left the nexus and the author of texture pack combiner wouldn't remove it.
0 Luinithil Posted May 28, 2013 Posted May 28, 2013 Actually SRO's author was banned because of a spat with the author of Texture Pack Combiner that escalated way out of hand, among other things. Meanwhile, 1k versions of SRO are out there, available via Google and torrents.

0 Luinithil Posted May 28, 2013 Posted May 28, 2013 Starac (SRO author) took major exception to Cestral's using his work in TPC. IMHO that's a silly argument since Cestral only picks this and that texture from the various packs, and simply semi-automates the installation process: users still had to download everything anyway. Then it was found that SRO was in contravention of the Nexus's "no payment to upgrade" rule, and he got kicked.

However most errors due to altering texture size/compression happen because the algorithms used do not do a good job at interpolating and/or resizing the textures which causes parts of it to get altered in bad ways... most often smearing. Most 1k textures at DXT5 compression are about 1.3Mb. Some textures are larger and special... like for plants where multiple parts of a texture is in one, hence the size increase. Also certain textures do not really require to get saved in DXT5 compression but could get a higher compression. Hence when you do the process on large packs some textures will in fact increase in size. Just check the total size of the texture folder after you have done the process and you will know.
