Question

Hello, i'm having an issue early on in game (Dragon Rising) with shouts not working.

As in the Fus-Ro-Dah shout has no effect, and no animation.

I have my first dragon soul, I picked up the word of power from Bleakfalls, and the shout is equipped.

My cooldown is triggered, the sound file for the character is triggered, but not the sound for effect of the shout.

So the character will say "FUS" and goes through the motions, but cannot knock a butterfly out of the sky or a rabbit off the road.

If I load Skyrim without mods, the shout will of course work just as expected.

I'm stumped.

I am using Step 2.2.5 with Mod Organizer.

On the surface, I cannot tell which mod would affect the Shouts in such a way.

Specifically, FUS RO DAH.

This also prevents the main quest from progressing.

When visiting the Grey Beards, I can't hit the targets to prove I am Dragonborn.

I used commands to progress the quest till I received Whirlwind Sprint, and I was able to use that Shout as expected.

However, I don't want to play the entire game that way!

I have reverted to earlier saves and new characters with no change in outcome.

Any thoughts?

Thanks for your time!

Only suggestion I can think of is to check whether or not you accidentally changed the controls for shouts to something other than z.

EDIT: Nevermind, I just re-read your description and it doesn't sound like you did this.

Thanks for replying.

No mods installed outside of STEP.

No DDSopt. Performance has been great.

I've actually been very pleased how everything has been running this time around.

I feel like it's a script error, but I am unsure of how to track it down.

Like I said, I can equip and use "FUS", my cooldown is activated, the character yells "FUS", the character moves as if shouting, but there is no effect on creatures and npc's.

No "cone of force" or however you would describe the effects of Fus Ro Dah.

interesting, i've encountered a bug multiple times, were I would use a shout, but no effect would appear and the cooldown wouldn't appear either, but I would not be able to shout until a certain period of time went past. That was mostly in mid of combat and probably due to me pressing the shout key very quickly.

Have you tried to press the shout button long? Also you might provide a papyrus log demonstrating the error. If it is a script-error, it will be mentioned there.

Right, I have tested out the shout every way I can think.

Sometimes npc's verbally react to the shout, but again it's not triggering the effect of the shout.

I am getting nothing in Papyrus, which is kind of odd.

Also, my racial ability is greyed out, even after the time limit has passed.

Not sure if that's related...

I've tried going to the Greybeards, to see if that would trigger anything with no luck.

Also tried using "setstage" to advance through the quests of "Way of the Voice" to no avail.

None of the bugs mentioned in the wiki seem to address this issue.

However, if I start the game without mods, it works as intended.

I tried going through and disabling groups of mods at a time, but I get too many CTD's that way to troubleshoot effectively.

I'm assuming it's a mod under STEP's "Animations and Effects" but none of that seems like it would affect Unrelenting Force.

Which makes me think it might be from the "Fixes" section... but who knows, it could be an interface bug for all I know.

I started a new character just to see if the same thing would occur and it did.

At this point I am looking at a reinstall, and... I think I would rather just move on. :P

Ok, only thing I can think about is to revert to a clean vanilla install, start a new game and play until you leave Dragonsreach to encounter your first dragon. Then you save and check whether you can shout without mods, if so, start enabling all of your mods in small groups (5-10) until you cannot shout anymore. For efficiencies sake I'ld recommend you try at least 3 times to shout, before calling it top or flop.

----Fixed It hurray-----

Hello, i was having the same problem. I spent all freakin day trying everything possible hours and hours.. Ugh. I finaly painfully went through every mod.

Destructible Bottles! Is the culprit disabling it fixed my Unrelenting Force.

No idea how this mod has anything to do with it but it fixed now.

Good luck!

Holy smokes. Destructible Bottles is the last place I would have looked.

Do you know what aspect of the mod was breaking Unrelenting Force?

Or was it just whack-a-mole? That's is some persistence on your part. Good work!

I was just combing through mods with TES5Edit, and I realized "I have no idea what I am even looking for".

My research was pointing at updates intended for Dragonborn DLC, and I thought maybe I missed something along the way.

In the end I reverted to Vanilla/Clean install.

Previously I did not have the Dragonborn, so I downloaded that as well as the updates and started from scratch.

Took about 6 hours to set everything up.

However, I am happy to say everything is working now.

Thanks for the advice torminater, thanks to Mod Organizer I was able to load a clean install right away and check the game without mods.

Everything worked as expected, I knew it was mod, just not sure which.

Yeah i just went one by one testing them it was a real drag.  I dont know enou about modding unfortunatly to do anything but turn it off.

I recall that when I looked at Destructible Bottles with TES5Edit, there was a record modifying the Unrelenting Force shout - presumably so the shout could actually destroy the bottles. However, I can't check at this moment - I'll remember to do so once I get home (and I will edit the post when I do), but for now, a temporary fix is to remove the record in Destructible Bottles modifying the shout with TES5Edit (it's under Spells or Magic Effects).

After examining what this mod is doing, I think I may know where the problem is, and how to fix it. Destructible Bottles modifies the record for the shout to use what appears to be a wrapper script - named "VoiceMulticastScritpt". (no, this isn't a typo. The author's spelling is terrible). This is so that the can destroy bottles. Weirdly, it seems to work for me when I've testing it - maybe installing Conskrybe, doing the shout with Destructible Bottles enabled, and uploading the resulting log on Pastebin or using the attachments here. If the shout appears to work for you now... then we have a Heisenbug (a bug that disappears r alters its characteristics on a debugging attempt).

I haven't tested it with some bottles nearby, to see if the bottle-breaking aspect works, but rest assured, it will be my next test of the mod.

EDIT: Yes, Unrelenting Force breaks the bottles, as intended, at least for me. Took me a few tries to do so, but once I did, I had broken glass. Wondering why the shout isn't working at all for the OP...

Also had this bug troubling me for a while till I came to the same conclusion, that DBE was at fault. I'm no expert in TES5Edit, but a quick look revealed that this mod replaces the original Unrelenting Shout spell with another one that mimics the behavior of the default shout and is used as a trigger to break bottles. This however breaks any quests that look for the specific spellid of the original shout. I made a small patch that overrides the override, which fixed it for me, but obviously this is a bandaid fix for a pretty severe bug. I believe that this mod should be removed from STEP until this issue is resolved.

For those troubleshooting, there are easier ways to test this bug than going all the way up to High Hrothgar. After killing the first dragon, the guards will talk about dragonborn. You receive the optional quest to shout (and impress the guards). If this bug is present, you will be unable to complete that optional quest (and the guard will continue to ask you to demonstrate your shout).

I had this bug, but it manifested a little differently for me. I could use Unrelenting Force, and it did affect other things in the game (pushing wolves back, making leaves fly up, etc). However, as noted, any quest related to it will not trigger correctly. Additionally, at least for me, the visual effect did not play. The cooldown bar activates, both visually and effectively, and the word can be heard, but the blue swirl does not emanate from the player.

Removing the breakable bottle mod restored full functionality, including the visual effect.

I second the request to remove that mod from STEP until a fix is released.
