Can't Dismiss Companion

This may have already been addressed but I can't find anything. I'm trying to take serana as a companion and she says "I can only go with you if its just us" and Brynjolf is my active companion. My only option is for him to wait in a certain tavern for me but I can't say its time to part ways or anything, the dialogue option is just not there, and I tried getting him to wait in a tavern and then take serana and I still couldn't

Brynjolf is a temporary follower for a specific Thieves Guild quest/dungeon, along with Karliah. They both leave at the end of that quest/dungeon.

NPCs whom you don't voluntarily recruit as a follower can't be dismissed.

If you somehow managed to recruit Brynjolf as a regular follower, then you must be using a mod for that, which is not in the STEP Guide.

No, I only used mods from the step guide, I followed it to the letter, I got guild master status by doing all the radiant quests, and he was then available as a follower, but now he won't leave.

Ok, my bad. The ability to recruit Brynjolf after becoming Guild Master comes from Relationship Dialog Overhaul [Lite].

I looked at the dialogue conditions in the plugin. In order to dismiss him, you need to talk to him in the Ragged Flaggon or the Ragged Flaggon Cistern. Then the dialogue option "It's time for us to part ways" will become available.

Does anyone see this conundrum?

It's either broken or user error (not noticing an option), because this "certain tavern" must be the Ragged Flaggon.

I meant I could send him to the riverwood, riften, whiterun tavern etc.

Ragged Flaggon is in Whiterun, so choose that.

I don't know what is meant by "sending to a tavern". How do you send a follower to a tavern? And then what happens?

Have you talked to Brynjolf in the Ragged Flaggon or Cistern yet? Did it work? Did you manage to dismiss him?

In case you're not familiar with those locations by name, the Ragged Flaggon Cistern is the headquarters of the Thieves Guild in Riften, and the Ragged Flagon is the tavern next door where Delvin and Vex hang out.

It's from Go on Ahead mod. You can send your companion to wait for you in towns and cities and they wait in taverns.
