In its current version, this mod sadly has a bug, in which as soon as you enter one of the major settlements, your character is then listed with having achieved thaneship in said settlement without having interacted with anybody or even having begun any favor or thaneship quests. See also the mod's post section about this.

Do you have this issue with the Step build then?

I think i already noticed this in 2.0.0. ...

Then I think we will be dropping this mod for 2.2.0 unless/until this issue is resolved.

Thanks for reporting.

Can this ESL be uninstalled mid-playthrough?  Does it require starting a new game?

The plugin has only custom records, so I don't think this will be an issue.

I am able to load existing saves without issue with this mod disabled. What I don't know is if the bug noted persists when this mod is disabled and if a clean save might be necessary to purge any PC faction mis-assignment caused by this mod.

It would be great if those that have experienced this bug could verify. Here's a way to do that:

https://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/663448-howto-see-factions/?p=37141545

For those that have an established playthrough going for 2.1.0, I would get a faction list this way for the PC before disabling this mod and then another after disabling this mod (and possibly one after clean saving)

It should be fine to uninstall this. You may have some orphaned scripts in your save, but they shouldn't hurt anything, and I don't think anything is game-start from this mod. It basically just checks the status of some quests stages and if true, displays some text. Fairly simple, tbh.

But I think the issue is that this mod is adding the Player to the factions without the Player ever having completed the requirements. So my question is if that's permanent in the savegame or not. The linked bug post indicates this if I'm interpreting correctly.

I don't know if this is helpful, but from an ingame perspective, the character still had to complete all the requirements/quests to become thane of the respective hold, while at the same time already being listed as thane in the mod's MCM, i always thought this to be two separate things.

OK, so this mod does NOT make you a thane, regardless of having completed the relevant quests? Or does it??

The post you linked alludes that it does. If it does not, then this is just a MCM-report problem with this mod.

You're right, the mod does not make you a thane and doesn't affect any gameplay, just shows that my character is thane in the factions window of the mod's mcm, for me, as soon as my character discovers the respective settlement/ town. This is why my initial post was so akwardly formulated and why i linked to the mod's post page, where this is discussed and the author tries to explain at which points their mod checks for thaneship and how.

If it is just a reporting problem, I don't think we should drop this. The other stuff is still useful, and it sounds like the author may try to fix it in an update.

Yeah, that's what I was getting at.

My next question would have been "should we drop this?" ... so that answers my question. I will re-tag as accepted, and now we know about this bug. I will make mention of it on the mod instructions.

No, it's just reporting you as Thane. Some other mod is likely the cause like GDO or RDO.

EDIT:
Sorry, I see others chimed it to say as much.
