Transferring an install to another PC

Question

Posted

I'm sure this has been asked somewhere, but I'm not having any luck finding it.

I set up an install a year or two ago using STEP, and absolutely love it, but something came along, and I never really got to take advantage of it.

My son (13) recently bought himself a copy of Skyrim, and I'm setting him up with his own install.  Watching him is going to make me want to play again myself, but my install is probably a year and a half out of date.  It would almost be easier just to start from scratch, but I'd hate doing two full STEP installs one after the other, especially since I'm pretty short on time lately.  Short enough that I'm causing myself some real problems just getting him set up.

That got me thinking - what would be involved in transferring a fully complete STEP install from one machine to another?  Would it just be a matter of, say, running the STEP guide through, perhaps, the pre-installation (1.x) level on the other PC and then copying a bunch of folders across the network?  Are there registry entries somewhere that would be missing?  What folders other than the Skyrim install directory and My Games/Skyrim directories would be involved?

And to clarify, I'm talking about two full, legally owned copies of Skyrim and the DLC here.

Once you have the two fully installed Skyrims in each computer it will just be a simple case of:

  1. installing MO on each
  2. install STEP on one
  3. copy the 'mods' & 'profiles' folders to the other PC
  4. ensure INI settings are correct on both
  5. enjoy

The only registry entries are for Skyrim and those are set once you start the game from the launcher at least once. To make things easier use the same drive and folder structure on both PCs, other wise you may need to tweak those as you go.

At any stage just ask here and someone can step you through at tricky point. (shouldn't be any though)

Excellent.  That will simplify things immensely.  Thank you!

Oh, and to clarify, that is the /mods and /profiles folders out of the main MO install folder, correct?
