Should I wait for the Remastered edition?

Question

Posted

So. I originally got Skyrim on PS3 when ot first came out. Halfway thru the game my PS3 YLOD'd and I didn't replace it. Since then, I've built myself a gaming PC, and last weekend I bought Skyrim PC on a whim and got STEP extended up and running (+a couple additional mods).

Now my question is: should I go ahead and invest myself in this new save file, or should I hold off until the Remastered version comes out? I know that a lot of stuff is up in the air until the game actually comes out, but what are you guys doing? Should I worry about being unable to transfer a heavily modded save file to the new game?

P.S. I apologize if this is the wrong place for this topic

This is a good question.

I think it depends on how much time you have to mess around with it.

If you have a good chunk of time I'd say yes as modding took me months to get all sorted out. Actually thinking about it, the answer depends on if all the skyrim mods have to be redone for the remaster. If yes then go for it because it would take a while for everything to catch up.

SKSE and ENB binaries will need to be redone for SSE. That will take a while, so anything dependent on those will be a decent while after SSE releases on Oct.28th.

Plus the 64-bit nature of the game will also require a new mod manager. MO2 is getting there, but is still currently in beta for FO4. Who knows how it will perform for SSE upon release (hopefully pretty well, with the kinks worked out FO4).

Any mods that don't need SKSE will still have to be at least ran through the Creation Kit and saved. End users should be able to do that, but it will be a while before a lot of mods are re-uploaded with an "SSE version" that doesn't need any manual tweaking.

Then there are rumours that SSE added some extra vegetation to the landscape, so if that is true it could possibly mess with landscape mods or anything that places stuff in the world (clipping issues, etc.).

SSE will be a separate game in your Steam games list, so it shouldn't mess with your existing Skyrim game or mods when it comes out.

So all-in-all, I would recommend playing now. Unless you feel like waiting until sometime in the new year for a comparable setup.

I say get out of the conundrums and start playing! Skyrim Special Edition will be released on October 28 so that gives you two months to get a really good play through going to get out and have some fun with that shiny new gaming rig.
