Question

Posted (edited)

I've never used Skyrim Mod Organizer, but I decided to give it a shot based on the STEP recommendations when I reinstalled Skyrim recently.  I'm currently having trouble with a CTD issue in Skyrim and could use some advice.

Some background on my reinstall process: I couldn't figure out how to get SMO (Skyrim Mod Organizer -- has nobody created an acronym for this yet?) to install SKSE properly, so I installed it manually.  Everything else I've installed since then has been through SMO.  I've been sorting with LOOT and testing gameplay periodically (at least a few times since the SKSE manual install) and hadn't noticed any problems.  The last time I tested, I ran into a serious problem - the game CTDs when I try to bring up the map.  I started uninstalling mods in SMO until I had EVERYTHING uninstalled AND manually uninstalled SKSE, yet it still CTDs when I try to access the map.

If I wasn't using SMO, I would look at my Skyrim\Data folder and ensure it looked like Vanilla.  With SMO overwriting things in the background, I'm unsure how to proceed.  Is there a SMO folder I can analyze to see if there are remnants of a bad installation lingering?  Any other tips?

Welcome to the forums

I am assuming MO 1.3.11 here. Each mod installed in MO has its own folder to keep the vanilla data directory clean, so there is not a Data folder to look at.

You can run a program like the 32bit free commander through MO and look at the data folder, which is what the game will see.

MOs left pane will show files in conflict with other mods by highlighting them when a mod is selected. Remember that in MO a mod with a higher priority will always win a conflict.

I have to cut this short, off to work

I'm curious when someone's going to actually offer geegee some "advice and troubleshooting" aside from being told that "it's not called Skyrim Mod Organizer" and tossing out the brilliant "it's not MO causing the problem". A little bit of "criticism-free" advice would go a long way, especially in making newer posters feel welcome. Or are new posters here typically just fed the same condescending advice they can receive from Nexus Forums? I guess he should be thankful that nobody has told him to use the search function (75 results, 1000 posts... start anywhere).

You say the CTD happens every time you access the map? Could you please post your INI files, cause that could easily be just a bad INI setting. Please note that your INI files can be easily accessed through Mod Organizer by clicking the Puzzle button-->Ini Editor.

Please use the spoiler tags too.

It is hard for us to try and troubleshoot an issue when we don't have many details, so please don't get mad at us for falling back to the standard problems that users have when experiencing CTD. We do want to help.
