Idiot proof S.T.E.P Guide

deviousdaemon

Question

I have been trying to follow the S.T.E.P guides since Skyrim, and thought they were a cool idea, but I haven't been able to get through any of the guides without constant CTD or inconsistences in the guide. I've tried the guides for Oblivion, Skyrim, Fallout 3, and now Fallout New Vegas but no matter how thoroughly I follow the guide, by the time I get to building the bashed patch, something goes horribly wrong. With the latest case of Fallout New Vegas, Mod Organizer refused to recognize any of the DLC, even with a "clean" profile. I re-verified and the DLC files we're indeed missing. Is there an idiot-proof guide somewhere for modding Oblivion, Skyrim, or Fallout New Vegas?

  • Oblivion guide is old and possibly out of date. But this is a fairly old game, and most people that would play it just play Skyrim instead.
  • FO3 Guide is pretty darn good...some minor kinks are being worked out right now, I believe. Best and most up-to-date FO3 Guide on the internet, IMO.
  • FNV Guide is quite good...was slightly out of date at one time, but Mono stepped up and between him and Ess the thing should be pretty solid. Again, best FNV Guide out there IMO.
  • Skyrim Guide (the only "true" STEP guide worked on by the entire STEP team) is absolutely rock solid if installed correctly. If you follow STEP (meaning the Skyrim guide), you should have absolutely no issues whatsoever in game. There are a few up-to-date Skyrim guides, and some are pretty good. I strongly believe STEP shares the crown for #1 with SR:LE, though. I can objectively say that STEP is known throughout the community for being a very good guide and extremely stable.

May I ask where you are having issues with the Skyrim guide? Maybe we can help. :-)

Well for Skyrim it's been a couple of years so I might have to go back to that one and give it a go again. It's really New Vegas that's giving me trouble. Any time I have to make a bash build for it, it ends up deleting core game files, and I'm not sure if it was something on my end, or "Wrye Flash".

You really should post questions in the appropriate guides about the specific issue(s) you're facing. I'll say straight away that something is terribly amiss with either your Wrye Flash/Bash installs, or the way you are using it, if that is what results when you create bashed patches. Core game files should never ever be removed by any tool, the only exception is perhaps when xEdit is called from MO when you are cleaning them, but that is well documented and the correct procedure is outlined thoroughly.

Please feel welcome to open a support thread in the F&L subforum, I'd do my best to help you out. If WB somehow (though I am completely amiss as to how) deletes your core game files, just copy them to another location and paste back in when you're done as a temporary workaround.

Each game guide is maintained by its own author and each has its own sub-forum visible from the main page:

Republic of STEP --> Packs --> Fear & Loathing in New Vegas -- Fallout New Vegas

Republic of STEP --> Packs --> Clear & Present Danger -- Fallout 3

Republic of STEP --> Packs --> Mythic Dawn -- Oblivion

The main forum is primarily for Skyrim and is centred around the STEP guide however there are also a number of related Skyrim guides also maintained by their own authors. In addition there are now guides based on other game studios besides Bethesda, The Witcher 3 being the foremost one.
